Adiyogi refers to the first yogi-a figure more central to Indian spirituality, particularly in yoga and meditation. It is far from just a historical figure; instead, it is considered the symbol where yoga, the practice which seeks to harmonize body, mind, and spirit, originated. Adiyogi is regarded as the ancient teacher who transmitted yoga practice to humanity, making him the foundational figure of this profound and transformative path. The origin of Adiyogi traces its roots in Indian mythology, mainly in the teachings of Shiva, the Lord of Transformation and Destruction in the Hindu pantheon. According to these myths, Adiyogi was the mystical being who lived in an era before recorded history, long before human civilization. Often, he is depicted as a god, meditative ascetic, or even a sage who achieved a deep state of consciousness due to his intense spiritual practices.
The most common myth related to Adiyogi is its transmission by him to seven disciples, called Saptarishi (Seven Sages), who later carried this practice throughout the world. They were great spiritual beings, and the foundations of many of the world's ancient traditions were laid through their teachings-Vedic, Taoist, and even specific lines of Buddhist philosophy. In Hindu culture, the word Adiyogi is often synonymous with that of Lord Shiva. It is said that Shiva, in his pursuit for more elevated forms of knowledge, withdrew and soared above the world of matter and flesh. His introspective meditation grew so highly concentrated that energy became felt as flowing from him. When his aura inspired seven great sages (Saptarishi), he asked them to sit under the tree, where they requested him to be taught the ancient science of life and spiritual awakening. Shiva then taught them the yoga techniques, not only being the postures as such but as a means to attain ultimate liberation or moksha through mastery over the mind, emotions, and sense organs.
As taught by Adiyogi, yoga is not merely a set of physical practices but also a system and direct approach to self-realization and inner transformation. The word "yoga" essentially means "union." Adiyogi's teachings point to the way to attain a blissful harmony whereby a person is blessed with the sight of realized association with all existence. The aim of this exercise is the death of the ego and the extinction of the illusion of separation between the self and the cosmos. The most potent symbol, however, has been the Adiyogi Statue in Coimbatore 112-foot-tall monument standing as a beacon of yoga and spiritual transformation. Though no similar statue exists in Mangalore, the Adiyogi influence goes across the region. Thus, the monument represents the 112 ways to spiritual enlightenment, all of which stem from the original teachings of Adiyogi.

Wear loose, comfortable clothes acceptable for yoga and meditation. Taut-fitting or revealing clothes would not be appropriate in a simple , disciplinal spiritual environment.
Comfortable footwear or be willing to walk barefoot in some areas, especially during meditation
Personal items: carry all your medications or other necessities you may require while there.
The centre promotes a calm and serene environment. Please keep silent or speak very softly, mainly in meditation or spirituality.
Be respectful of the sanctity of the environment. Obey all rules and regulations posted by the staff.
The best time to visit Isha Yoga Centre in Mangalore is between October and March, when the weather is more relaxed and manageable. The temperatures range from 22°C to 30°C , perfect for outdoor activities, yoga, and meditation. The peaceful ambience at this time adds to the spiritually uplifting experience. Do not come during the monsoons (June through September), as heavy rain, high humidity, and even travel disruptions may be expected in Mangalore. From April to June, summer can also become very hot and humid, with temperatures swelling up to 35°C, so less ideal for prolonged outdoor stay. Also, visiting Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, gives the centre a memorable spiritual experience with unique events and celebrations. Weekdays are better for a quieter, more peaceful visit than weekends.

Transport: A taxi or private cab should be taken from the airport, which should take 30-40 minutes to reach the centre.
Nearest Railway Station: Mangalore Junction Railway Station.
