Madhugiri is a town in the Tumkur district of the Indian state of Karnataka. The name of this city is given by the hillock known as the Madhu-giri, which means honey-hill in Sanskrit. The city comes under one of the educational districts of Karnataka state as a whole, which consists of 34 numbers. 

The Madhugiri Fort is in Madhugiri town, in the Tumkur district of Karnataka. Madhu-giri is simply one hill. It's  the second monolith of Asia. It's a small town  about 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Bengaluru , and it is  famous  for  its  fort and many temples. This destination has many tourists visiting in search of the beautiful architecture  present in the fort. The fort is located at the top of the hill's steep slope and was constructed during the Vijayanagar Dynasty. 

Also, this is one of the notable trekking places near bangalore, which can be visited during the day and at night. Undertaking a trek on the trail up the hill on a night of full moon is one of the adventurous things that you can do at Madhugiri. At the top of the mountain, the display of natural beauty around you will be an enchantment to cherish!

Madhugiri Fort was built in the 17th century, but it was constructed and completed under the supervision of Raja Hire Gowda from the Vijayanagara dynasty. It was later fortified in the 18th century by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan. This is a paramount stronghold of Mysore rulers. The British occupied it in the year 1791 under the Anglo-Mysore wars, and this fort has gone through many battles and happens to be one of the important centers of resistance by which the Indians fought against the British during the Indian freedom fight. 

MADHUGIRI HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The architecture of this fort is unique , and granite stones are used in it. It is accompanied by a series of gateways, walls, bastions, and watchtowers and is an example of military architecture in the bygone era. There are seven concentric walls with a series of gates and enclosures on each wall.

  • The walls are so steep that it is almost impossible for the enemy to climb them. One of the most exciting features of this fort is its massive entrance, called the 'Diddibagilu,' or the 'Gate of Hell.' The entrance is about 25 feet high and 17 feet wide, with a series of chambers. 

  • It was the ammunition, weapons, and food storage.  There was also a secret passage entrance that the soldiers would use in case of danger while escaping. The fort has several water tanks and  a temple dedicated to Lord Gopalakrishna. The carvings in the temple are beautiful, flaunting the brilliant Hoysala architecture. 

  • The main activity that has to be undertaken in Madhugiri is trekking up to the Madhugiri Fort. This is not too  arduous and can be done in two to three hours , covering 3.5 km. The path up to the fort is beautifully  scintillating, providing a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and countryside.

  • The fort is an imposing structure  comprising a series of gates, watchtowers, and bastions built during the period of the Vijayanagara Empire. Parts of the hike towards the top are steep, but the view atop is well worth the ascent. Here, tourists behold the beautiful architecture of the fort along with sceneries. 

  • The town is very culturally rich and diversified. Quite a few festivals are happening here throughout the year, including the Kambadahalli Kere Utsava, which takes place in  January. This festival is a significant attraction and draws many tourists into the state.

BEST TIME TO VISIT :

The best time to visit Madhugiri is between April and June and between November and March. During this time, the weather is quite pleasant, and the atmosphere turns into a lovely display of ambient colours. From July to October, the hilltop witnesses the rainy season, which must be avoided when visiting Madhugiri.

TIPS FOR VISITING MADHUGIRI:

  1. The monsoon season is not one of the best times to visit Madhugiri. The wet roads and slippery trails make it very tiresome and difficult to stay afoot, and the terrain can be a major problem to traverse.

  2. Always carry enough water with you to avoid incidents of dehydration.

  3. Ensure you wear comfortable clothes and footwear to avoid unease.

  4. Since the trail is long, ensure you are physically fit to undertake the trek. Exercising and stretching activities a few days before the trek might be helpful.

  5. For a night trek, make sure that you are equipped with adequate torches and batteries, which will be very useful.
