Things To Do Near Makalidurga Overview

The Makalidurga hill fort is near the village of the same name. It lies 60 km north of Bangalore and 10 km after Doddaballapura on the way to Gauribidanur. In its mythology, an old Shiva temple, with Nandi atop the hill, has been used for penance by Markandeya Rishi. Makalidurga Fort is a great granite hillock that lies huddled up amidst the chains of hills, formed like a valley close to Ghati Subramanya, an important pilgrimage center. On top, it has a fort at a height of 1,117 m. It has become one of the trekking destinations for adventure lovers. Many people trek to this place at night.

Makalidurga, at about 1,117 meters above sea level, enjoys a panoramic view of the landscape around it. Gazing from the hill presents an attractive, luxuriant verdure of forest cover, rocky terrain, and village vistas, making this an excellent destination for nature lovers. The granitic landscape around Makalidurga has giant boulders and rocky outcrops that add to the rugged beauty of this territory.

The ascent to the summit consists of dense, steep forests with rocky patches and small streams. The natural flora of this area is rich in varieties of species, with several deciduous trees, shrubs, and medicinal plants. Generally, the entire area appears green throughout the monsoon period, and for trekkers, there is a view of assorted birds and butterflies. The vicinity also hosts the Makali Durga Lake, an aesthetic water body that has enhanced the glory of this place. For bird lovers, Makalidurga offers a great platform in the sense that several different species of birds can be seen here, like the Indian eagle owls, kestrels, and vultures. The sight of the majestic raptors soaring through the air while searching for their prey could be viewed from the top of the hill.

Makalidurga is significant in history as the fort on top of the hill has managed to stand the test of time. Popular belief grants the construction credit to the powers of the Vijayanagara Empire, but historical reports show that it might have been built or renovated by later kingdoms. It was a strategic location that allowed a commanding view of the landscape outside, and it was an essential point in defense during ancient times. There is hardly any record of what happened on the inside walls of the fort, but it is said that the fort was a military base and an asylum. The fort's architecture is straightforward, with solid stone walls, gateways, and a few remains of buildings. The fort, in combination with the nature around, is one of the attractions not just for trekkers but history enthusiasts alike.

Beyond the fort, the region of Makalidurga is significant in history. According to folklore, it is where Tipu Sultan's army battled the Marathas in the 18th century. The fort is said to have been taken and retaken numerous times because of its strategic location. On a purely trekking adventure, there are also many other activities that people can experience around the hill. Among some activities people engage in over here is rock climbing. The region surrounding the mountain has numerous granite formations that are perfect for bouldering and climbing, and rock faces here range from beginner to advanced levels, so there is something for every type of climber. Photography and bird-watching are wonderful hobbies for the more easy-going traveler. The varied ecosystem and beautiful sceneries provide many opportunities to photograph nature.

Moreover, for those interested in camping, several open areas surround the base of Makalidurga, and one can erect a tent and spend a night under the stars. The serenity of the place and the cool breeze and clear skies make the camping experience even more enjoyable. One of the prime trekking near Bangalore, this trek can be done day and night. This is one of the adventurous things you can do on the Makalidurga trek: a trek up the hill trail under the night of a full moon. When at the summit of the mountain, the beauty around you will be an enchantment to cherish!
