Things To Do Near Mekedatu

Things To Do Near Mekedatu Overview

Mekedatu is also popularly known as "Goat's Leap" in Karnataka. It is a picture postcard and culturally important  spot  in  south India, with the state of Karnataka by its side. Situated in the Ramanagaram district, this lies  approximately 40 km  south of Bengaluru, the Karnataka capital. Bekal is famous for its natural beauty but provides only breathtaking views of the River Cauvery , snaking through rocky gorges and dense forests.   Besides its scenic appeal, this is of historic and religious importance, attracting nature lovers and pilgrims alike in Karnataka. Mekedatu occurs when the River Cauvery cuts its gorge into a narrow pass with rugged terrain  , dense forests in all directions , and rolling hills.  The river's unique path is Dominating the landscape as it cuts through the rocky valleys, creating quite a mesmerizing contrast between the flowing water and cliffs. The name  "Mekedatu," literally Kannada for "goat's leap," refers to an interesting legend about a goat that allegedly leapt from one side of the river to the other at this place.

The Cauvery River, serene and wild in this site, is renowned for clear water flowing from the gorge, surrounded by  luxuriant greenery. Various waterfalls and  streams mark this quiet stretch of water , making it a paradise for photographers, nature , and adventure enthusiasts. This landscape view of this place during monsoon months  is awe-inspiring as the river flows with full tides when the forest comes alive in a new veil of foliage. The region  around this is a varied one. It falls under the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over Ramanagaram, Chamarajanagar, and Mandya districts. This is a rare sanctuary with many species of flora and fauna, including endangered species such as the Indian leopard, Bengal tiger, wild boar, several other species of deer,  and  even  several species of birds, such as the white-rumped vulture, the painted stork, and so on.

The forest surroundings at dense with Indian teak, sandalwood, and bamboo trees and , therefore, constitute the  ecological diversity of the place. It becomes a destination for eco-tourism and nature walks where different visitors can see the flora and fauna of the region in their natural habitat. The efforts of the state government and wildlife agencies toward the conservation of the area have been foundational in the maintenance of the ecological balance.  This place holds religious and mythological importance for the people of Karnataka and other  surrounding regions. According to popular Hindu lore,  "Mekedatu" originates from a great myth. Long ago, it was believed that the god Rama, accompanied by his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, was travelling toward Lanka  through the forests when Sita became thirsty and asked for water. Rama shot an arrow into the river, and the water that burst forth created a narrow passage, which is said to have been the site of the river crossing here.  Another origin for the name "Mekedatu," was said to have originated from the leap of a goat that was said to have jumped over the narrow passage.

This has attracted attention as a future site for large-scale development. The Karnataka government plans a Mekedatu Reservoir project involving constructing a dam on the Cauvery River to improve water supply and irrigation to the regions around it. The project has received mixed reactions. Some argue that it is likely to provide better irrigation, drinking water, and power generation for the local people. Environmental enthusiasts and wildlife experts have expressed apprehensions about the potential harm it may cause to the ecosystem,  particularly to the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and the surrounding forests.

A perfect place of nature, spirit, and adventure, this is an abode for any traveller. Whether the scenic  views of  the  river, richness in biodiversity, or the interesting legend about the place, this is that peaceful haven from the  rigours of city life. It forms a vital part of Karnataka's natural and cultural landscape  as it attracts tourists because of its beauty, religious significance, and the scope for adventure tourism. Sustainability and sustainable  development become an essential facet, however, to ensure that this uniqueness is not lost over time for future generations.  Also, this is one of the notable one-day trips from Bangalore, which can be visited both during the day and night.  One of the adventurous things you can do at Markonahalli Dam is trek up the hill  along the trail  on  a whole moon night. And at the very top of the mountain, the display of natural beauty around you will be an enchantment to cherish!
