Nijagal Betta is an unknown but beautiful hillock in the Indian state of Karnataka, near Tumkur. It forms part of the Devarayanadurga range of hills and assumes importance in geography, culture, and spirit. The hillock has been a trekker's and nature lover's paradise, for it offers excellent opportunities to explore the beauty of rural Karnataka and its unique biodiversity and heritage. This article went deep into the history, importance, trekking trails, and natural beauty of Nijagal Betta.
The history of Nijagal Betta is centuries old. This hill has an associated ancient temple and fortifications that offer a glimpse of the region's past. Some small temples are at the bottom of the Nijagal Betta , and some are considered to have been raised during the Chola and Vijayanagara periods. The major temple of Lord Shiva exists at the bottom end of the hill and is a most important place for pilgrims during the festival of Maha Shivaratri. It is thought that the mountain , along with its surroundings, was once a place of worship for the ancient locals who regarded it as sacred .
This hilltop fort is one interesting ancient artefact. It is believed that Nijagal Betta was a military station during the Vijayanagara Empire period. Remnants of walls, gates and watchtowers are scattered throughout, which gives a view of how strategically important this region must have been in the medieval period. Although small, it is relatively very important in design. One can see the plains and hills surrounding from the vantage position. It is said to have had a very significant presence during the times of the Marathas and later in the British Raj. Some local legends even go so far as to say that the hill was used as a military lookout post by the Maratha forces, especially during the 18th century.
Nijagal Betta is a perfect destination for trekking and adventure seekers. The hill offers a moderately strenuous climb that can be covered within a few hours; it, therefore, makes a perfect day outing for people who would love to get their share of outdoor activity with their families. Pertain comfortable clothes and comfortable footwear that will not discompose you.
Since it is a long trail, take care to keep yourself fit enough to undertake this trek. Exercising and stretching activities a few days before the trek may be helpful.
