Coakers Walk

Coakers Walk is one of the most famous attractions that can be found within the peaceful hill station of Kodaikanal in the State of Tamil Nadu. Known for its commanding views, pleasing climate, and serene ambiance, Coakers Walk creates the perfect opportunity  to soak in the area's natural beauty. A stroll  down this pleasant promenade is a must for any traveller to Kodaikanal, be it solitude, photography space, or  a quiet saunter through nature. Coakers Walk is a trail on the southern side of Kodai Hills designed in 1872 by Lieutenant Coaker  , the British officer to constructed such a pathway. It was built  to provide people  with  a  wide-angle view of the surrounding valleys. This path was initially designed for a stroll, but with  time, this place became one of the phenomenal spots of Kodaikanal among tourists and locals. 

This 1-kilometre-long walking pathway constructed along the flank of a mountain ridgeline has, over time, remained the most tourist-friendly destination and the best route to take in the natural wonders of Kodaikanal as well as some of the most panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and hills. Its position and construction allow it to stand out as one of the finest viewpoints in the Western Ghats. The surrounding Coakers Walk and the beauty of nature are breathtaking. Thicky green all around, the surrounding hills with lush forests and plantations. A misty atmosphere combines cool mountain air to create a serene, almost ethereal ambience. On a clear day, you can see panoramic views of the vast valleys below while walking, but the walk has charm even on misty or rainy days. The mist seems to give the landscape a mystical feeling, creating a mysterious glow around the surroundings. 

Another high point of Coakers Walk is the view of Sivaganga Valley. The walkway is situated at the bottom of this vast valley and incorporates tea gardens, farms, and  tiny villages on its plush green carpet. The panoramic view is surreal, especially when the clouds linger low over this valley , giving the area a serene and almost  ethereal feel. The distant Madurai plains may be seen from the walk on clear days. The grassy dawns stretch far out into the distance, sharply contrasting with the lush green hills of Kodaikanal. This view is breathtaking when the sun breaks through the mist to warm up the landscape early in the morning.  It can be viewed  from Coakers Walk. The Vaigai Dam, located in the foothills of the Kodai range, presents a tremendous scenic splendour when surrounded by forests and hills. 

The actual walk on Coakers Walk is easy and pleasant. The path is well-maintained, about 6 feet wide, and  accessible to all ages. Its convenience makes it ideal for strolling about, taking in the sights and views. Since it is built along the edge of a mountain ridge, one does not have obstructions on either side. The whole route is tarmacked and fitted with a protective railing on the outer edge to protect visitors. The slope is very gentle, and at some points, it's a bit uphill, but generally, it is  easy to walk, even for kids and older people. Coakers Walk, Kodaikanal, is best visited in the early mornings or late evenings when it is warm and mist  makes the beauty of hills and valleys look the more beautiful. The best periods are between March to June when temperatures are relaxed and friendly. Winter is also good, with crisp weather and clear skies from October to February. Monsoon (June to September) brings mist and lush greenery but may make it slippery, the best time is dry weather for safety and experience.

The entry fee for Coakers Walk is significantly cheaper. It charges an entry fee of INR 10 per person for Indian nationals and INR 50 per person for foreign nationals.

1. Kodai Lake: Just 1 km from Coakers Walk, the heart of Kodaikanal, an artificial lake set amidst rolling hills that reminds of one and all of the town's most impressive landmarks. Boating can be enjoyed in the serene waters of the lake, while a walk around its circumference takes one through some of the most beautiful views. There are also picnic spots; much may be said about a quiet afternoon spent here. 

2. Bryant Park: Bryant Park: This highly well-managed botanical garden, not too far  from  Kodai Lake, is one of the quietest places in Kodaikanal. The park boasts many flowers, plants, trees and other species exotic to their origin. It is a decent spot to relax while amidst the beauty of nature or for a casual stroll. 

3. Pillar Rocks: About 8 km from Coakers Walk is the Pillar Rocks, a marvellous natural formation of three giant granite pillars standing 400 feet high. Pan-organic views from the rock formations to the valleys are one of the most sought-after views in Kodaikanal. The area around these rocks is ideal for photography, and the mist, which mostly veils this site, adds to its mystique. 

4. Dolphin's Nose: This viewpoint is around 8 km from Coakers Walk and is one of the finest views of Kodaikanal. Its name has been derived from the rock formation's resemblance to a dolphin nose. One can envision the breathtaking view of the hills, valleys, and Vaigai Dam. This spot is particularly a favourite amongst  trekkers and adventure lovers, as this involves almost a moderate trek through the forest. 

5. Silver Cascade Falls: Silver Cascade Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls, around 8 km from Coakers Walk to Kodaikanal. A waterfall cascades from about 180 feet and has silver-like spray, especially when monsoon rains, as it looks like silver. Silvery cascade draws nature lovers and photographers. Even though the falls are reachable by road, the area around it is a short trek for visitors.

6. Chettiar Park: A peaceful oasis, Chettiar Park is approached via Coakers Walk , approx 5 km. A fine view bed of flowers, tall trees and mowed grasses will  attract  your attention. Less crowd can be seen, hence an ideal spot for a quiet walk or a family picnic an excellent place to relax  amidst greenery, with mountain air sending all the senses abuzz. 

7. Shenbaganur Museum: Should you want to know the flora and fauna of Kodaikanal, the Shenbaganur Museum lies about 5 kms from Coakers Walk. The museum is part of the Shenbaganur Wildlife Sanctuary and features more than 300 species of plants, flowers, and animals discovered around that area. It's an education really in the richness of biodiversity of Kodaikanal. 

8. Kodaikanal Solar Observatory: Astronomy buffs will probably also appreciate the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, another sight seen from Coakers Walk, by going along Pillar Rocks Road. This is one of the oldest such solar observatories in this country. The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory  gives some sense  of what research  into the sun means, at least as an adjunct to astronomy. As it is sometimes open to visitors, it would probably be a good idea to book  and find  out what  tours  and displays are available for your visit. 

9. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary: Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is  about 80 km from Kodaikanal in the neighbouring state of Kerala. It is a heaven for  wildlife: it has plenty of richness in flora and fauna, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and many species of birds. Dense forests form a canopy over the sanctuary and offer themselves as a backdrop to the brilliance of the refuge, including the Idukki Reservoir. 

10. Kurinji Andavar Temple: Kurinji Andavar Temple is located beside Coakers Walk and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is known for offering spectacular views of the Vaigai Dam and the Sivaganga Valley. This temple also holds historical importance since it is connected with Kurinji flowers, which bloom  every 12 years. 

HOW TO REACH: 

• Road Network: Kodaikanal is well connected through roads to cities such as Chennai, Bangalore  and Madurai. Once you reach Kodaikanal, Coakers Walk is about 1 km from the town centre, walkable, or you can hire a local taxi. 

• By Train: The Nearest Railway Station, Kodai Road, is about 80 km from Kodaikanal. From there, you can take a taxi or bus to the town. 

• By Air: The nearest airport is at Madurai, 120 km from Kodaikanal. From there, one can hire taxis and buses to reach Kodaikanal.
