Fairy Falls

Fairy Falls is a 30-foot (9-meter) high waterfall cascading down moss-covered rocks, creating a delicate, almost ethereal sight. The water flows gently over the stones, and in the monsoon season, it becomes a roar of cascading waters to add to the visual drama of the falls. The location is surrounded by a thick forest, which adds more natural charm to this location and allows the perfect natural setting for photography and nature walks. It is fed by water from various streams surrounding the hills within the area, which flows down into the waterfall to form it. During the monsoon months from June to September, it is best visited by all those who love to see the falls as they flow full from their lush and green settings all around. However, even during the post-monsoon period, the falls are gentle in their flow, and the weather is also pleasant for hiking and picnicking. 

What makes Fairy Falls incredibly different from other heavenly waterfalls of  Coorg is that this one is more peaceful and falls amidst a coffee estate. The forest area  of this place is affluent in biodiversity; here, one can spot many species of birds, butterflies, and local flora. Visitors are treated to the soothing sounds of water, rustling leaves due to the wind , and coffee blooms fragrances in the air.  What characterizes a visit to Fairy Falls is the trek one has to undertake to reach the falls. The trail begins from a car park close to the falls, along a passage that winds through coffee plantations and into a dense forest. Far from being particularly taxing, the trek is accessible to most people while also opening them up to a grand opportunity to explore this rich landscape of Coorg. While walking, experience the natural view around you, with chirping birds, rustling leaves, and the fragrance of coffee plantations.

Visitation to Fairy Falls should be done during the monsoon time when the water flow reaches its highest and when the landscape is at its best because it is all lush and green. Of course, a price has to be paid for such heavy rainfall , slippery pathways , and unforgiving weather, and therefore , visitors are advised to exercise caution.  There's another perfect season to visit during the post-monsoon season, from October to February, when the climate is cool and pleasant. The flow may not be as  strong as during the monsoon season, but still, it's a fantastic view, and the weather could be suitable for trekking or photography. Fairy Falls is one of the quietest and prettiest waterfalls located in Coorg. If you are willing to trek through coffee plantations, take good snaps, have a calm picnic time, or enjoy nature, then Fairy Falls is the best place to be. Serene surroundings, lush greenery, and the soft waterfall sounds make Fairy Falls a treasure that must be visited while visiting Coorg.

1. Abbey Falls (10 km from Madikeri): Stretched amidst coffee estates, Abbey Falls is one of Coorg's most visited places. The waterfall falls from a height of 70 feet.  A scenic view of the waterfall offers a feeling and look at the falls if visitors cross the hanging bridge nearby. 

2. Raja's Seat (5 km from Madikeri): Raja's Seat is visited for its breathtaking sunsets A splendid viewpoint with a broad panoramic view of the Coorg hills and valleys. The place has very well-kept gardens and  a musical fountain . 

3. Omkareshwara Temple (5 km from Madikeri): This temple has Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. It is beside a small pond, giving visitors a peaceful and sacred feeling . 

4. Talakaveri (40 km from Madikeri): This is revered as a sacred site and the origin of the Cauvery River. Brahmagiri hills have this place surrounded by a Lord Shiva temple here. Treks to this region are marvellous. 

5. Dubare Elephant Camp (30 km from Madikeri): Dubare Elephant Camp is located on the banks of the Kaveri River. It's a famous place to interact with elephants, feed them, and get an idea about their training. It's fun for all the people who love animals. 

6. Iruppu Falls (60 km from Madikeri): A beautiful waterfall in Brahmagiri Hills, Iruppu Falls is a serene destination for trekking activities.  

7. Chettiar Park: A peaceful oasis, Chettiar Park is approached via Coakers Walk , approx 5 km. A fine view bed of flowers, tall trees and mowed grasses will  attract  your attention. Less crowd can be seen, hence an ideal spot for a quiet walk or a family picnic an excellent place to relax  amidst greenery, with mountain air sending all the senses abuzz. 

8. Shenbaganur Museum: If you want to know about the flora and fauna of Kodaikanal, the Shenbaganur Museum lies about 5 km from Coakers Walk. The museum is part of the Shenbaganur Wildlife Sanctuary and features more than 300 species of plants, flowers, and animals discovered around that area. It's really an education about the richness of biodiversity in Kodaikanal. 

9. Kodaikanal Solar Observatory: Astronomy buffs will probably also appreciate the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, another sight seen from Coakers Walk, by going along Pillar Rocks Road. This is one of the oldest such solar observatories in this country. The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory  gives some sense  of what research  into the sun means, at least as an adjunct to astronomy. As it is sometimes open to visitors, it would probably be a good idea to book  and find  out what  tours  and displays are available for your visit. 

10. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary: Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is  about 80 km from Kodaikanal in the neighbouring state of Kerala. It is a heaven for  wildlife: it has plenty of richness in flora and fauna, with elephants, tigers, leopards, and many species of birds. Dense forests form a canopy over the sanctuary and offer themselves as a backdrop to the brilliance of the refuge, including the Idukki Reservoir.

Kurinji Andavar Temple: Kurinji Andavar Temple is located beside Coakers Walk and is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is known for offering spectacular views of the Vaigai Dam and the Sivaganga Valley. This temple also holds historical importance since it is connected with Kurinji flowers, which bloom  every 12 years. 

HOW TO REACH: 

• By Bus: Located about 5 km from the main town of Coorg, Madikeri, the Fairy Falls are easily accessible by buses from Coorg. You can hire a taxi or drive from Madikeri to the falls. 

• By Air: The nearest airport is Mangalore International Airport, which lies about 150 km from Coorg. There are numerous flights from the airport to cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, and Chennai. You hire a taxi from the airport to reach Madikeri, and from there, you can head to Fairy Falls. 

• By Train: The nearest central railway station is  Mysore ,   120 km from the destination. Taxis or bus hire will make it possible to reach Madikeri from Mysore. From there, you can hire local transport to Fairy Falls.
