Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium

The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium at Bengaluru, Karnataka, is one of the institutions of repute in the country for research and educational pursuits in astronomy. The government instituted it to commemorate the name of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is significant in publicizing and educating people about the world of space and space astronomy. Indeed, this place is a great destination for children, students, families, and all science enthusiasts interested in finding an explanation of the very mysterious universe. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium was established in 1989 by the Bangalore Association for Science Education, an organization engaged in science education and the popularization of science, especially for students. It is not just a place where celestial events are to be watched, but it is the hot hub for interactive learning, innovative exhibitions, and different types of educational programs. The Bengaluru Planetarium was conceptualized  in the late 1980s when felt need for scientific outreach, particularly at that time across the gamut of astronomy, warranted that an intervention be made, and an important science educationist - K S Krishnan, played a good role in bringing the dreams to real life. It was inaugurated on 6th July 1989 by the then Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, and was done precisely with the hope of having space science and astronomy outreach to the citizenry.

BASE, Bangalore Association for Science Education sponsored the construction of the planetarium and initiated an outreach programme to popularize science and interest in space. In fact, the setting up of the planetarium marked a significant milestone in disseminating astronomical knowledge to a much larger section of society, at least in a city like Bengaluru, which has always been an IT and scientific research hub. This represents that the modern architectural sense with functionality is very much present in the design of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. The planetarium building is located in the heart of the city of Bengaluru and is near Cubbon Park, which symbolizes science and modernity. Dome-shaped is one of the most important features, which is used for the projection of celestial images. The screen is the actual projection area of the planetarium for its prime attraction: the Sky Theatre, where the highest quality of technology has been  implanted to reproduce night skies accurately for immersion in genuine astronomy. The diameter of this planetarium's dome measures 15 meters, and it can project perfectly into it because of its size. It can provide the experience of going astral as accurately as real.

The Sky Theatre is the Jewel of Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. It is one of the domes that shows a sequence of celestial events, including constellations, planets, stars, and galaxies. The visitors get almost a virtual tour of what the night sky looks like; expert speakers lead them to comment on a wide array of celestial bodies and phenomena. All these programs at Sky Theatre are meant to attract all age groups and interested members of the public. Although some programs are usually planned and programmed for public attraction in general, others are just programmed for students only. In reality, information related to all these programs is  fundamentally educational. It usually explains concepts and ideas, such as the solar system, the stars, the Milky Way galaxy, black holes, the Big Bang Theory, space missions, and many other issues. Besides its usual daily shows at the Sky Theatre, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium has charted a number of other programs and events throughout the entire year. Such programs range from workshop participation to lectures and open sessions on star-gazing by the public. The planetarium incites public involvement in these activities due to its propensity to delve deeper into astronomical subjects. Another very popular event the planetarium hosts is its star-gazing events. During such events, telescopes are handed out to participants who, under the guidance of astronomers, observe such celestial objects as planets, stars, and the moon. Such events draw great crowds during astronomical events, such as eclipses, meteor showers, and viewing comets.

Other events held here in the planetarium are workshops and summer camps for school-going children and students of any age who want to study space science, astronomy, and its related branches. The topics include the solar system, journey through space, star constellations, and space physics. The students will be introduced to the basics of astronomy and practically get themselves involved in model rocketry or even building their star map.  Besides the Sky Theatre,  several  exhibition galleries there house models and interactive exhibits on astronomy and space science. The exhibitions allow visitors to learn about the universe  even  in  a  more tangible fashion, from the formative stages of galaxies to the operating of telescope technology. The models on the planetarium include that of the solar system. The scaled model has presented relative distances and sizes between the planets in our solar system. There, one will realize how planets position themselves and also other features associated with each specific planet, such as how it feels on Venus or Saturn to feel temperatures, which can be termed hot and extremely hot, as well as having rings forming the body composition of Saturn.

The planetarium offers interactive shows on the moon's phases, eclipses, and solar flares , amongst other exhibits. Amongst other technologies, touch screens have been used in  different shows to present information more interactively. Besides the solar system model, there is a spacecraft model with different space missions. There are models of space shuttles, satellites, and rovers that visitors can use to visualize the advanced technology used for current space exploration. The planetarium also entered the digital world. E-learning helped the planetarium reach wider audiences by using media sources online. It engages the public in its outreach programmes regularly through webinars, workshops and virtual space exploration programs. As a result, people anywhere in the world can participate in astronomy and space science. The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is one of the amenities available on the premises , and it provides a broad range of services to visitors. It is a family  place totally wheelchair friendly , hence accessible to all ages and people with disability too. There is a bookshop selling books, educational materials, and space-related products.
