WHO IS LORD KURINJI: 

Lord Murugan is the deity of the Kurinji region. The name Kurinji Andavar, which is used for Lord Murugan in the Kurinji Andavar Temple in Kodaikanal, symbolizes the connection between the hill region and the God of the hill. 

• Significance: The Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu God of war and the "God of the hill."

STORY OR HISTORY OF KURINJI: 

The Temple was named after the famed Kurinji flowers that blanket the hills of Kodaikanal in purple and blue. These flowers are tied to the name of the ‘Nilgiri Hills.’ In a rare phenomenon, Kurinji flowers only bloom once in 12 years. Strobilanthes Kunthiana is their scientific name, and it is locally called ‘Neelakurinji.’  

Kurinji flowers can be found in roughly 33 different types in the Ooty mountain ranges. It is a natural phenomenon, and neither a scientist nor a naturalist has been able to come to any conclusions on how the Kurinji flowers stick to the time intervals of 3, 7, 12, 17, and 36 years for flowering, one of the many mysteries of the mother earth still unsolved! 

Located at a distance of 3 km from the Kodaikanal Lake, Kurinji Andavar Temple is a place worth visiting, not just for religious tourists. Dedicated to Lord Muruga, the Temple holds an important position amongst Hindu devotes. Lord Muruga is referred to as the 'God of the hill.' In Tamil, the word Kurinji means 'hill region'’ and Andavar means 'God.' Thus, the name symbolizes its connection with the hill and the God of the mountain. The Temple also connects with the Kurinji flower, which blooms on the mountain once every 12 years. It is said that the flower bloomed last year in 2004. According to some, the honey from this place during the year when the Kurinji flower booms has medicinal value.

The Temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga, who is referred to as the 'God of the hill.' Just 3 km from the lake, it is very famous for its Kurinji flower, which blossoms in the area only once every 12 years. You can also enjoy a fantastic view of the Palani and Vaigai dams from this temple. Apart from this Temple, there are many other religious places as well, such as the Mariamman Temple, Vinayagar Temple, Murugan Temple, two mosques at Ellis Villa and Munjikal, Sacred Heart Church, and many more. The Temple is an essential venue for the summer festival, organized annually in May. Hordes of tourists visit the Temple to seek God’s blessings. Along with religious significance, the Temple also presents tourists with breathtaking views of the Vaigai Dam and Palani hills.
