WHAT IS PILLAR ROCK?

The 400-foot towering granite rock formations are a natural beauty to explore. From the vantage point of the Pillar Rock, you can enjoy the serene beauty of Kodaikanal. These three rocks stand shoulder to shoulder. The gap between the two rocks is called the 'Devil's Kitchen’. If you go on a trek, guides will lead the way. There are also waterfalls near the rocks. With its natural setting and lighting, the tourist destination is any photographer's paradise.  

HOW TALL IS PILLAR ROCK: 

Pillar rocks are two 122 m (400 ft) high rock formations situated 7 km (4.3 mi) from the Kodaikanal lake.

A pillar is a landform, either of rock or earth, defined by the USGS as: "Vertical, standing, often spire-shaped, natural rock formation (chimney, monument, pinnacle, pohaku, rock tower)." Some examples of rock pillars are Chambers Pillar, Katskhi Pillar, Pompeys Pillar, and Pillar Rock.

Once, a 'white cross' existed on these rocks, representing the eternal love of a man called David Gelli for his wife, Irine Gelli. While on their honeymoon, Irine Gelli is said to have slipped into the pillar rocks. David, in her memory, placed a white cross on top of the rock, after which he is believed to have committed suicide to be united with his wife. But the cross withered with time, despite several efforts to maintain it.  

ENTRY FEE AND TIMING: 

The entry timing to the Pillar rocks is between 9 am and 4 pm, including Sundays. The fee per person is Rs 5, and you must pay Rs 20 for a still camera shot. If you take your kids along, be extra careful to keep them away from the edge of the rocks. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Also, note that liquor consumption is prohibited at the place. 

The best time to visit the Pillar Rocks is in summer, which is between April and June. The weather doesn’t get too overwhelming in summer, with temperatures varying between 20 and 36 degrees Celsius. Early mornings are relatively calm and perfect for adventure activities such as trekking, hiking and sightseeing from the summit.

  1. Kodai Lake: Nestled in the heart of the Western Ghats, Kodaikanal is a charming hill station in Tamil Nadu, India, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and tranquil environment. At the centre of this idyllic town lies Kodai Lake, a stunning artificial reservoir that has become a focal point for visitors and locals alike. 

  2. Dolphine Nose: An ideal spot for those interested in trekking, the trail to the Dolphin's Nose covers a distance of 3 km in the Palani Hill Range. This viewpoint is a favourite among the tourists who adore the glory of the Princess of Hill stations. 

  3. Devil's Kitchen: Guna Caves, initially named  Devil's Kitchen, are notorious for their dangerous history as many people who entered to explore them have disappeared without a trace. As of 2016, police have recorded 16 disappearances in connection with the cave without bodies being retrieved. 

  4. Kodai Palani: The Palani Hills are a mountain range in the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu and  Kerala. The Palani Hills are an eastward extension of the Western Ghats ranges, which run parallel to the west coast of India. 

  5. Pambar River: The Pambar River, located in southern India, is approximately 64 kilometres (about 40 miles) long. It originates from the Western Ghats, flowing through the Tamil Nadu state before merging with the Kottakudi River. 

  6. Kurinji and Navara temple: Lord Murugan is the deity of the Kurinji region. The name Kurinji Andavar, used for Lord Murugan in the Kurinji Andavar Temple in Kodaikanal, symbolizes the connection between the hill region and the God of the hill.
