Vidhana Soudha

Vidhana Soudha is one of the landmark iconic structures of Bengaluru, Karnataka, which has epitomized the legislative and democratic functioning of the state. The Karnataka State Legislature seat includes the Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) and the Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) of the state. An architectural marvel, Vidhana Soudha is not only an important political centre but also an icon of the rich history, culture, and governance of Karnataka. It was constructed between 1951 and 1956 by the then-chief minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah as it was going to serve the state legislature building of Karnataka after shifting the legislative body from the old Government House. It emerged as a landmark in Karnataka both in the political and administrative history of the region. The very name "Vidhana Soudha" means Kannada words for "Legislative Building". As such, it is also a legislative ground; Vidhana Soudha is indeed a ground of decision. It is also where significant decisions are made , and so many political dialogues go on. 

Vidhana Soudha is very well known for its beautiful Neo-Dravidian architectural design. B.R. Manickam has designed this good example of modern Indian architecture.  This building emerged as the outcome of infusions of the influence of the Dravidian style of architecture along with neoclassical features. Granite and  limestone were  mainly  used while constructing the Vidhana Soudha building, which carries carved work, massive domes, and broad staircases. The dome of the building is the most  predominant feature of the building as it stands with a structural height of 45 meters , and this very dome itself portrays the unity and integrity of the people of Karnataka. The facade of this building, which carries statues, carvings, and inscriptions, all give grandeur to Karnataka's history and culture. The centre hall contains legislature chambers in which legislative sessions are held. The seat of Karnataka's legislature, Vidhana Soudha, is critical in the state's governance and political process. Here, the Chief Minister, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) meet to deliberate on the state policies, enact  laws, and address crucial matters concerning the public. This building is shared between the Chief Minister of Karnataka and the Governor. Due to its beautiful architecture, Vidhana Soudha is one of the essential places for different political activities, elections, and decisions. The office of the Governor has been the primary constitutional authority, standing under the leadership of the chief minister.

4. M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (1.5 km): Huge cricket stadium that provides international as well as local cricket matches. For those cricket lovers, this would be a great place to visit during the seasons. 

5. Vikasa Soudha (0.5 km): This architectural wonder  is located in the vicinities of Vidhana Soudha and has housed many government offices. It almost looks like Vidhana Soudha in its architecture. So, this is one of the essential political buildings of Bengaluru. 

6. Vishveshwarya Industrial and Technological Museum (2 km): The science and technology museum has fascinating exhibits, including space science, robotics, and the history of industries. It is an excellent place  for families with children to visit. 

7. Attara Kacheri (Karnataka High Court) (1 km): This is a historic structure that houses the Karnataka High Court. It is the best example of colonial architecture one can see in Bengaluru. 

8. Sri Chamarajendra Park (1 km): Also called Cubbon Park. This is a very viable park for outdoor activities. It has many statues, including those of Queen Victoria and other famous people from the history of Karnataka. 

9. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium: 2 kms. Science lovers will find this planetarium of value, with interactive space and astronomy-based displays, having shows that make it an entertaining outing for the young and the old. 

10. KR Market or Krishna Rajendra Market: 3 km This is the most colourful and vibrant market in Bengaluru. They mainly deal with flowers, spices, and fresh fruits and vegetables. It is best recommended for those who desire the zest of the city market. 

11. Chitrakala Parishath (2 km): This is one of the most significant cultural institutions dedicated to Indian art. The complex houses various exhibitions, workshops, and performances. It is here that  passionate lovers of art can see the best in Indian art, both contemporary and traditional. 

12. UB City Mall (2.5 km): With International Brands, Fine Dining and Art Galleries, UB City is quite perfect for a luxurious shopping outing or an easy-going evening. 

How to Reach: 

• By Air: The nearest Airport to Vidhana Soudha is the Kempegowda International Airport (BLR). It is about 36 km from the location, and you can get into a taxi or ride-hailing service directly to the Vidhana Soudha, which would take from 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic. Alternatively, BMTC operates airport shuttle buses that connect the airport with other parts of the city , with routes passing near Vidhana Soudha. 

• By Train: There are a number of essential train stations in Bengaluru. The nearest to Vidhana Soudha is Bangalore City Railway Station, also called SBC , about 6 km from that place  . Auto and local buses are all available at an approximate distance of about 15-20 minutes. Another major station at the same distance is approximately 8 kilometres away, known as Yesvantpur Junction. The above options are available. 

• By Bus: The Vidhana Soudha place is well accessed , too , with buses from BMTC originating in all parts of the city. Several local routes pass or nearby that arise from significant points of this kind, like Majestic and Shivaji Nagar. One could stop at Vidhana Soudha Bus Stop, which is within walking distance of the destination.
