Kedarkantha Trek stands among the finest and most of Indian winters. Located in Uttarkashi, Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, and Uttarakhand, the trek is a fine mix of landscapes' beauty, adventure thrill, and cultural richness, and thus endeared by young as well as old trekking adventurers. The hike runs through thick pine forests, village hamlets, white meadows, and ancient temples and finally culminates with grand Kedarkantha peak at 12,500 feet. Kedarkantha is unique in the context that with every step of this trek, the scenery changes drastically. The trek starts from Sankri village, a small countryside village which is nestled between massive mountains and greenery. Higher, pine and oak trees give way to humongous snowfields, especially from December to April, when the entire landscape is transformed into a white wonderland. The fresh-fallen snow, ice-covered lakes and blue-blue sky are a fairy-tale landscape inviting nature enthusiasts and photography enthusiasts.
The ascent to the summit is thrilling and rewarding. The final ascent, moderately inclined, reveals some Himalayan summits such as Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Ranglana. All the efforts pay off in the end. The sunrise on the summit of Kedarkantha is one to remember, with golden light bouncing off the snow-clad summits bathing the entire region in an enchanting aura all around the entire region. Kedarkantha is not only a scenic beauty, but also offers the local culture and way of life of hill people. Homestay or camping on the trekking trail provides the trekkers a chance to interact with the friendly and warm villagers, enjoy the local food, and experience their traditional way of life. With its relatively easy trail, well-signposted trails, and accessible base camp, Kedarkantha Trek has something for everyone with little fitness. Solo on a solo trek, family in a group, or even friends, Kedarkantha has it all, the ultimate trekking experience with the perfect blend of nature, adventure, and tranquillity.
The Kedarkantha trek, as popular a destination of the contemporary Himalayas as it is, has a bountiful legacy of folklore and myths as well as cultural heritage incorporated into its natural world. From Hindu mythology to within the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttarakhand, the place is replete with tales of yesteryears which gel pretty harmoniously into people's lives of this region as well as the spiritual ambience of the Himalayas. The word "Kedarkantha" literally means "Lord Shiva's Throat" (one of Lord Shiva and Kantha throat's names in Sanskrit). Kedarkantha mythologically also happened to be the exact location where it came to Lord Shiva's mind that he would sit and meditate after resigning from Kedarnath. He started meditating at Kedarkantha but was interrupted from his peaceful mood by a senseless turmoil created by local villagers and wild creatures. Due to the failure, Shiva went to Kedarnath and established himself there instead, where the legendary Kedarnath Temple is. The unsuccessful attempt at constructing the temple at Kedarkantha is marked by a small divine stone temple that was built on top, where there is a communal halt for climbers to offer prayers.
The region around Kedarkantha also has its origins in the Indian epic Mahabharata. Locally, it is held to be true, according to tradition, that the Pandavas in exile had passed through this pass while going up to Swargarohini, mythological heaven steps. Some peaks visible from the top of Kedarkantha, such as Swargarohini, also have a connection with these myths and give a religious touch to the trek. The people here, the Jaunsari tribe mostly, have revered these mountains for centuries now and have had them as their gods. These forests and meadows here were once summer grazing by shepherds with cattle, and the routes along which the trekker now walks were the old pilgrimage routes and trade routes. Although the local religious significance of Kedarkantha was subsequently well known among the locals, it was only in the recent two decades that it became a famous trekking destination. With winter treks and Himalayan expeditions becoming more and more popular, Kedarkantha remained an adventure seeker’s hotspot but yet did not lose its virginity and religious significance. And today, trekking to Kedarkantha is not just an adventure, it's traversing history, mythology, and living Himalayan culture.
Sankri Village: Sankri is the Kedarkantha trek base village and a place in itself. At an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, Sankri is a small Himalayan village surrounded by dense pine forests and snow-capped mountains on all sides. It offers stunning views of the Swargarohini ridge and has Jaunsari tribespeople residing within. Travellers are fortunate enough to see wooden villages, cultural food, and hospitality. The village is also used as a base camp for other treks like Bali Pass and Har Ki Dun.
Juda Ka Talab: Found on the trek route to Kedarkantha peak, Juda Ka Talab is a peaceful high-altitude lake dotted with oak trees and pine forests. It is said to have been created when Lord Shiva lost some of his locks of hair, and as one raindrop fell to the ground. Winter covers the surface like ice, a dreamlike scene reminding one of the fairytale type. It remains a trekker's camp, also a peaceful retreat in silence and snow.
Har Ki Dun Valley: Not far from Sankri is the Har Ki Dun trek, another popular Garhwal Himalayas delight. It is also a famous valley due to its mythological significance, as people feel that this is the path along which the Pandavas had come when they entered heaven. Ringed by rolling green meadows, alpine forests, and snow-covered peaks all around, Har Ki Dun is ideal for nature lovers and seekers of peace who like secluded trekking trails and a traditional way of life. It is sparsely inhabited, and it offers a more real and virgin Himalayan experience.
Osla Village: En route to the Har Ki Dun trek, Osla village is a far-off village famous for its ancient wooden houses and Someshwar temple of epic hero Duryodhana of the Mahabharata. The village gives a peek into the people of the hills with irrigated land, the Jaunsari way of life in the traditional sense, and smiles of friendship. It is a classic offbeat spot to unearth history and local culture.
Taluka and Seema: Seema and Taluka are sweet little villages that serve as stopover locations as part of a regular stoppage in the Har Ki Dun trek. Lying in deodar and rhododendron woods, the villages provide simple accommodation and scenic views of the area. These villages are a good distraction or digression from your Kedarkantha trek if you wish to explore more of the lesser-known Garhwal Himalayas.
Winter (Dec to April): Best time for Kedarkantha trekking, mid-December to early April. It is the period when the trail is lined with new snow, and the whole trek is a white abode. Snowy pine woods, Juda Ka Talab iced and the otherworldly sunrise from the top make it so special. It is best suited for those seeking the best snow trekking Himalayan adventure. Do not miss wearing winter clothing as nights drop as low as -10°C or more.
Spring (Mid-April to Mid-May): As winter gradually leaves, snow melts out and room is made for flashes of green pastures and rhododendrons in bloom. April until mid-May is ideal if you want to see the snow gradually giving way to spring with fewer crowds and pleasant weather. It's ideal for photography with a mix of snowy mountains and greenery.
Summer (Mid-May to June): The path is dense, green, and the peak wildflower bloom season is in late May and June. Day temperatures are warm but not hot, and nights are cool. It is an excellent trekking time for beginners and families alike. Yes, you will not find snow here, but blue skies and ultraviolet chromatic landscapes offer it as a good substitute.
Monsoon (July to September): Monsoon is wet and rainy, and the trails are slippery and landslide-prone. This area cannot be walked in as it is risky and one has less visibility. However, the area gets too intense in green colour, and this is the time when the ecosystem will be rejuvenating itself.
