dandeli

A haven for adventure seekers. The rural and hilly landscape of the Western Ghats makes the place extremely favourable for treks, rock climbing, and jungle safari. A few of the most sought-after trekking trails are scenic vantage points such as Sykes Point and Kavala Caves, where there are simply lovely vistas of rolling green landscapes. Nature's rock caves at Kavala are a good place to go with their old rocks and a Shiva temple within. Adventure aside, Dandeli is a wonderful destination to unwind too. The Syntheri Rocks, whose granite monolith is enclosed by a picturesque waterfall, are a serene locale. The Anshi National Park, falling within the purview of the Kali Tiger Reserve, is a serene retreat for wildlife and nature lovers both. The homestays and eco stay at Dandeli provide the guests with a rustic but warm ambience wherein they can live through the jungle life themselves.

History of Dandeli

Dandeli, an ordinary historical town of Karnataka state, has a centuries-old rich history. Western Ghats town was first settled by ancient dynasties and tribal men who had created its culture and heritage. "Dandeli" was founded as a local usage of Dandelappa, a faithful servant of a local ruler. As per them, Dandelappa was martyred for his blind loyalty and the town became popular by his name. Up to now, the Dandelappa Temple remains a testament to the people's belief and a holy religious abode to the common masses. Dandeli also came under the previous ruling dynasties that governed Karnataka, such as the Kadamba Dynasty, one of the ancient kingdoms that governed this region. The Kadambas, who were famous for their architectural achievements and rule, also contributed to North Karnataka's history. The Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, and the Vijayanagara Empire later ruled and overpowered the place, and contributed to the place in terms of culture and history.

dandeli

During British colonialism, Dandeli was renowned due to natural resources and forests, primarily timber. British administrators made efforts to investigate the prospects of dense Dandeli forests and created timber industries in the early 20th century, starting mammoth economic and infrastructural growth. With the addition of the West Coast Paper Mill in 1959, the development of the town received a boost, with staff and migrants from within Karnataka and overseas. Over time, since deforestation had been a concern, the government of Karnataka issued large parts of the Dandeli forests as protected forests, and thus the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1956. This helped safeguard the vast biodiversity of the location and turned Dandeli into an eco-tourism destination. The sanctuary comes under the Kali Tiger Reserve, which will play an important role in safeguarding species that are at risk, such as tigers, black panthers, and hornbills.  Though Dandeli has become a tourist destination for wildlife and adventure, it still glows with its cultural and historical majesty.
