The beauty of Hampi is in its unique landscape, dotted with humongous boulders, banana groves, and paddy fields. Ruins spanning a vast 4,100-hectare area tell of the era when Hampi was a commercial and cultural hub. Ruins of palaces, temples, and bazaars tell of the engineering magic of Vijayanagara rulers, who made Hampi one of the richest cities in the world in the 14th to 16th centuries. The most sought-after Hampi monuments are the Virupaksha Temple, a Lord Shiva temple. The current temple, prayed to even today, is a holy site and thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit it annually. The Vittala Temple with the large stone chariot and musical pillars is another engineering marvel that one should experience. A few of the most famous places among others are Lotus Mahal, Queen's Bath, Hazara Rama Temple, Hemakuta Hill, and Elephant Stables, and all these make one remember the prosperous heritage of Hampi. aside from history, Hampi is a nature lovers' paradise. The coracle rides are provided by the Tungabhadra River, and the rolling hills provide perfect spots to cycle and view the ruins at leisure. The cultural diversity of Hampi is exhibited through its Hampi Utsav, an annual celebration of the local heritage in the form of traditional dances, music, and performances. The town also boasts a relaxed backpacker atmosphere, with lively cafes at the Hippie Island (Virupapur Gadde), where travellers can relax after trekking in the town all day. With its enchanting blend of history, adventure, and nature, Hampi is a destination that leaves each tourist awestruck. It could be the history enthusiast, the adventure enthusiast, or anybody looking for relaxation in a serene atmosphere, but Hampi has in store one experience towards the past that no one will ever forget along with an ability to see the glory of Karnataka's heritage.

History of Hampi

Hampi, a renowned writer on India's historical and archaeological monuments, was a sturdy capital of the medieval Vijayanagara Empire. It is in Karnataka, a World Heritage Site, an example of centuries of history of the early medieval period. Hampi ruins spanning 4,100 hectares are proof of an empire, a forerunner among the world's most prosperous kingdoms of their times. Hampi also has an earlier history before the Vijayanagara Empire. Hampi is believed to be the mythological Kishkindha of Ramayana, the kingdom of monkeys. Lord Rama met Hanuman and Sugriva in Hampi on his path towards finding Sita. Hill, rockscapes, and river banks here are said to bear descriptions in ancient Hindu scriptures and thus a great pilgrimage spot.

Hampi was placed on the map in 1336 CE when Harihara I of the Sangama dynasty and Bukka Raya I established the Vijayanagara Empire. They ruled over Hampi when Hampi was a prosperous commercial centre, hub of culture, and capital. The empire jumped miles ahead and reached its peak in the reign of Krishna Deva Raya (1509-1529 CE), one of the most magnificent expansions in Indian history. The golden age of the Vijayanagara Empire brought Hampi into prominence for temple palaces, fort walls, bazaars, and palaces. Persians, Portuguese, and Chinese merchants flocked to see its grandeur and civic charms. Arts and architecture patronage under the empire resulted in the creation of ageless wonders like Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple, Lotus Mahal, and Elephant Stables.

The prosperity of Hampi was cut short in desperation in 1565 CE when the Battle of Talikota led to Vijayanagara soldiers being defeated by the alliance of the Deccan Sultanates (Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmednagar, and Bidar). Hampi was sacked, burnt, and abandoned, and thus the grand empire came to an end. Hampi lay deserted for centuries, temples and scattered remains the only testimony of what had been. Hampi was rediscovered in the 19th century by British archaeologists, and Hampi was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 as part of an effort to conserve its cultural and historical heritage. Now a living museum, Hampi is frequented by visitors, historians, and adventure-seekers worldwide. Its monuments, temples, and boulder-studded topography continue to echo the splendour of an empire in its decline to nowhere.
