History of Chikmagalur

chikmagalur

Chikmagalur, which is now well known for its coffee plantations and serene landscape, is a highly culturally and historically diverse region with a centuries-old history. "Younger Daughter's Town" is Kannada for the word "Chikmagalur.". It is thought to have been donated to the younger of the two daughters of powerful Sakrepatna chief Rukmangada as dowry, when during one dynasty wedding, by the tradition of such practices, the elder daughter received a neighbouring land which became Hiremagalur. The towns are quiet and both towns have each one respective unique cultural identities based on this mythology. Earlier, Chikmagalur was part of the Hoysala Empire (10th-14th century), which was one of the best of South Indian dynasties. The Hoysalas have left behind a cultural heritage replete with architecture, in the shape of temples built in their characteristic star-shaped design, with delicate carvings made out of stone. While the bigger temples are located at Belur and Halebid, their influence extended far into the land of Chikmagalur. One of the finest examples of the religious and architectural tradition of the region is the Kodandarama Temple at Hiremagalur.

The region was subsequently under the Vijayanagara Empire and Mysore Kingdom. During this time, Chikmagalur was a high-rainfall agrarian belt with an undulating landscape. Despite this, its real turning point was in the 17th century when Sufi saint Baba Budan is believed to have brought seven coffee seeds from Yemen and planted them in Chikmagalur hills. Here coffee began to be cultivated in India, and Baba Budangiri hills are considered the beginning of coffee in India. During the British colonial era, coffee estates were cultivated methodically, and there existed economic progress and global renown for the region. Colonial bungalows, estate homes, and commerce centres started coming up, making Chikmagalur a coffee centre. Chikmagalur now web history to nature's beauty, ancient temples, Islamic mosques, and colonial structures with pulsating local culture and festivals. Chikmagalur's past offers a unique charm a peaceful hill station ruled by myths, empires, saints, and colonizers. As a resort for visitors as a tourist place, Chikmagalur is equally landscaped and unravelling Karnataka's complicated past.

Must-Try Local Dishes in Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur is not just an eye feast—there's a taste feast for your senses too. The local cuisine, following the Malnad (Malenaadu) culture, has remained in fashion with its homemade flavour, and liberal use of coconut, spices, and veggies, according to seasons. And if you do get a chance to go to this hill paradise, then here are a few local food items that you simply cannot miss:

1. Akki Roti (Rice Flour Flatbread): Soft, lightly crunchy, and frequently served with onions, green chillies, and coriander, Akki Roti is a popular family dish in Malnad. It is served with coconut chutney or vegetable curry and is an appropriate breakfast or lunch.

2. Kadubu (Steamed Rice Dumplings): Soft, fluffy rice balls that the natives love, steamed generally covered with banana leaves, and eaten with hot, spicy sambar or chutney. It is a wonderful health food and fit for a harmless light meal.

3. Malnad Biryani / Pathrode Biryani: Not the biryani you are familiar with—Malnad Biryani uses locally found herbs, coconut, and less oil to give a distinctive flavour. Even Pathrode Biryani is served, which has colocasia leaves and rice and a spicy mix of masalas with an acidic flavour.

4. Pathrode (Spiced Colocasia Rolls): One of the most popular home-cooked recipes made from rice batter spread over colocasia leaves, rolled, steamed, and sliced. Spiral slices are spice-filled and shallow-fried or steamed based on choice.

5. Kesari Bath: Food lovers with a sweet tooth cannot but adore the Kesari Bath. A saffron-yellow semolina sweet dish filled with ghee and flavoured with cardamom served as a breakfast staple in home restaurants.

6. Filter Coffee: Last but not least, no Chikmagalur food trail is complete without genuine filter coffee. Prepared with the estate beans that have just been ground, it's strong and pungent and the perfect accompaniment to round off any meal.

Chikmagalur is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is based on your experience preference—whether drizzly treks, green landscapes, or bright coffee breaks.

  • October to March – The Ideal Retreat (Peak Season)

It's the best time to go to Chikmagalur, especially for treks, sightseeing, and nature walks. The weather is nice and cool ranging from 14°C to 32°C. It's the best time to see wildlife at Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary.

  • June to September – Monsoon Magic (Offbeat & Green)

Rain enthusiasts need to arrive in June and September when Chikmagalur is a green paradise. The Hebbe, Jhari, and Manikyadhara waterfalls are in full fury, and the coffee plantations are misty and dreamy with drizzle. Trekking may be slippery and closed in certain areas, but it is perfect for a peaceful, warm holiday. Don't forget your raincoat and camera!
