History of Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur, located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, boasts a rich and diverse history that dates back several centuries. Chikmagalur is indeed the "younger daughter's town" in Kannada and also has a mythological history of Rukmangada, the local king, having gifted the town to his younger daughter. The area also has its share of the history of the region as far as the history of the region is concerned regarding the coffee trade, which was cultivated after the planting of the first coffee seeds by a Yemeni saint in India in the 17th century. The all-time greatest Chikmagalur personality is Baba Budan, who is a Sufi saint of great reverence. Baba Budan is said to have begun the culture of coffee here after, unbeknownst to all, seven seeds with them to India following a pilgrimage to Mecca. He sowed them in the Chikmagalur hills where climate and terrain offered the perfect conditions for the plant to thrive.

chikmagalur

This was the beginning of Chikmagalur as a trend-setting coffee-growing region, and it was the "Coffee Land of Karnataka." The plantations were increasing year by year, transforming the profile and economy of Chikmagalur. Chikmagalur was politically and culturally an active centre under the rule of the 10th-century and the 14th-century Hoysala Empire. Hoysalas governed architectural activities, and some of the temples that may be found scattered across Chikmagalur, including the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu and the Kedareshwara Temple, talk about this common practice in architecture. The temples are famous for being decorated with beautiful carvings and sculptures that talk about the heights of those times.

Following the decline of the Hoysala Empire, Chikmagalur was under occupation by different dynasties like the Rulers of Vijayanagara and Mysore Wodeyars. The region experienced different power struggles, which have solidified its place in history. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the economy of Chikmagalur also was controlled to a large extent by the British colonial state in the form of coffee estate plantations and construction infrastructure. Chikmagalur has a history now and what is left of history is to be seen in architecture, tradition, and culture. The interface between nature and history locates Chikmagalur making the place a stunningly beautiful location for tourists to get embedded in the Karnataka history. This coffee plantation region but witness to the local course of history as well, Chikmagalur is thus a treasure house for Karnataka's identity.
