At Escape2explore, we’re committed to providing a memorable and safe trekking experience in the majestic Himalayas. The terrain and weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so please follow these essential do’s and don’ts to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek.
Do’s:
Listen to Your Guide: Our professional guides are experts in Himalayan trekking. Always follow their instructions and trust their judgment, especially in tricky or high-altitude areas.
Acclimatize Properly: The Himalayas mean high altitudes, which require proper acclimatization. We’ll ensure a gradual ascent, but it’s crucial to take things slow and follow the itinerary to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water and rest when needed.
Wear the Right Gear: The Himalayas can be cold, even in summer. Wear layered clothing, including thermal wear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy, insulated trekking boots with good grip. Bring a hat and gloves to protect yourself from cold winds.
Hydrate and Eat Well: Dehydration happens faster at high altitudes. Keep sipping water throughout the trek and eat enough food to maintain your energy. Our team will provide regular breaks to recharge.
Use Trekking Poles: Himalayan trails can be steep and uneven, so using trekking poles can greatly reduce the strain on your knees and help you maintain balance.
Respect Local Culture: The Himalayan region is home to diverse local communities with rich cultural traditions. Respect the customs, interact politely with locals, and follow any guidelines provided by your guide.
Carry Essential Items: Bring items like sunscreen (even in the snow!), lip balm, sunglasses, and a first-aid kit with altitude sickness medication. It’s better to be prepared for the high-altitude sun and cold winds
Be Environmentally Conscious: The Himalayas are pristine and need our care. Follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ policy by carrying back all waste, respecting wildlife, and leaving nature undisturbed.
Don’ts:
Don’t Ignore Altitude Sickness Symptoms: If you feel dizzy, have headaches, or feel nauseous, inform your guide immediately. Ignoring these signs can lead to serious health issues. We can adjust the pace or descent if needed.
Don’t Rush or Overexert Yourself: The key to trekking in the Himalayas is steady progress. Don’t rush ahead, as it can strain your body at high altitudes. Take breaks when needed and walk at a pace that’s comfortable for you.
Don’t Pack Unnecessary Items: Light backpacks make for easier treks. We’ll help you with a packing list, so don’t bring heavy or non-essential items that will weigh you down on steep climbs.
Avoid Trekking in Dangerous Weather: The Himalayan weather can change rapidly. We monitor conditions closely, but if your guide suggests delaying the trek due to rain, snow, or windstorms, trust their decision.
Don’t Wander Off Alone: The vast Himalayan landscape can be disorienting. Always stick with the group, and let your guide know if you need to stop or take a break. Avoid exploring unfamiliar areas on your own.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Consuming alcohol or smoking can worsen the effects of altitude sickness and lower your stamina. It’s best to avoid them before and during the trek for your safety and well-being.
Don’t Harm the Environment: Avoid littering or causing damage to the natural surroundings. The Himalayas are fragile, so we ask you to be mindful and carry back any waste to designated disposal areas.

Ghepan Ghat is a stunning high-altitude glacial lake in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. Tucked away from the usual trekking routes, it remains relatively unexplored, offering pristine turquoise waters, surreal landscapes, and a peaceful atmosphere, making it a dream destination for offbeat trekkers.
The Ghepan Ghat Trek is categorized as a moderate trek with some challenging sections. While the distance is manageable, trekkers must be prepared for steep ascents, rocky paths, and high-altitude conditions. Good fitness and prior trekking experience help in making the journey more enjoyable.
The best time to embark on the Ghepan Ghat Trek is from June to September. During this period, the weather is relatively stable, the snow has melted, and the lake showcases its stunning blue-green hues. Trekking in winter is not advisable due to extreme snowfall.
The trek covers approximately 10-12 km one way, making it a two-day trek with an overnight stay at a campsite. However, some experienced trekkers complete it in a single day, depending on their pace and acclimatization.
The trek takes you through a variety of terrains, including lush green meadows, rocky patches, glacier-fed streams, and moraines. The final stretch leading to the lake involves a steep climb over boulders and scree, requiring careful navigation.
Currently, no special permits are required for this trek. However, since it is in the Lahaul region, it is always advisable to check with local authorities or tour operators in case any new regulations are introduced.
Yes, experienced trekkers can do Ghepan Ghat solo, but it's always safer to trek with a group or guide due to the remote location, lack of marked trails, and unpredictable weather. Beginners are advised to join a guided trek for safety.
The biggest challenges include steep ascents, high-altitude effects, unpredictable weather, and lack of proper camping infrastructure. Carrying enough water, wearing proper trekking shoes, and being mentally prepared for harsh conditions will help overcome these difficulties.
Pack essential items such as sturdy trekking shoes, warm layered clothing, a rain jacket, trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, a water bottle, and high-energy snacks. A lightweight tent and sleeping bag are required for overnight stays.
There are no fixed accommodations or lodges on the route. Trekkers either set up camps near the lake or at designated spots along the trail. Some prefer returning to the base village on the same day.
Since it involves high-altitude trekking, preparation should include cardio workouts, leg strengthening exercises, and regular hiking practice. Start training at least 3-4 weeks before the trek to improve stamina and endurance.
Yes, you can join the trek to Ghepan Ghat. The trek’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
