At Escape2explore, we’re committed to providing a memorable and safe trekking experience in the majestic Himalayas. The terrain and weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so please follow these essential do’s and don’ts to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek.
Do’s:
Listen to Your Guide: Our professional guides are experts in Himalayan trekking. Always follow their instructions and trust their judgment, especially in tricky or high-altitude areas.
Acclimatize Properly: The Himalayas mean high altitudes, which require proper acclimatization. We’ll ensure a gradual ascent, but it’s crucial to take things slow and follow the itinerary to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water and rest when needed.
Wear the Right Gear: The Himalayas can be cold, even in summer. Wear layered clothing, including thermal wear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy, insulated trekking boots with good grip. Bring a hat and gloves to protect yourself from cold winds.
Hydrate and Eat Well: Dehydration happens faster at high altitudes. Keep sipping water throughout the trek and eat enough food to maintain your energy. Our team will provide regular breaks to recharge.
Use Trekking Poles: Himalayan trails can be steep and uneven, so using trekking poles can greatly reduce the strain on your knees and help you maintain balance.
Respect Local Culture: The Himalayan region is home to diverse local communities with rich cultural traditions. Respect the customs, interact politely with locals, and follow any guidelines provided by your guide.
Carry Essential Items: Bring items like sunscreen (even in the snow!), lip balm, sunglasses, and a first-aid kit with altitude sickness medication. It’s better to be prepared for the high-altitude sun and cold winds
Be Environmentally Conscious: The Himalayas are pristine and need our care. Follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ policy by carrying back all waste, respecting wildlife, and leaving nature undisturbed.
Don’ts:
Don’t Ignore Altitude Sickness Symptoms: If you feel dizzy, have headaches, or feel nauseous, inform your guide immediately. Ignoring these signs can lead to serious health issues. We can adjust the pace or descent if needed.
Don’t Rush or Overexert Yourself: The key to trekking in the Himalayas is steady progress. Don’t rush ahead, as it can strain your body at high altitudes. Take breaks when needed and walk at a pace that’s comfortable for you.
Don’t Pack Unnecessary Items: Light backpacks make for easier treks. We’ll help you with a packing list, so don’t bring heavy or non-essential items that will weigh you down on steep climbs.
Avoid Trekking in Dangerous Weather: The Himalayan weather can change rapidly. We monitor conditions closely, but if your guide suggests delaying the trek due to rain, snow, or windstorms, trust their decision.
Don’t Wander Off Alone: The vast Himalayan landscape can be disorienting. Always stick with the group, and let your guide know if you need to stop or take a break. Avoid exploring unfamiliar areas on your own.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Consuming alcohol or smoking can worsen the effects of altitude sickness and lower your stamina. It’s best to avoid them before and during the trek for your safety and well-being.
Don’t Harm the Environment: Avoid littering or causing damage to the natural surroundings. The Himalayas are fragile, so we ask you to be mindful and carry back any waste to designated disposal areas.

The Rumtse to Tso Moriri Trek stands out for its raw, untouched landscapes and high-altitude adventure. Unlike more commercial treks, it offers solitude, interaction with nomadic Changpa tribes, and views of lesser-known alpine lakes. The trail covers around 100 km over 8–10 days, crossing several 5,000m+ passes, ending at the stunning Tso Moriri Lake.
While prior high-altitude trekking experience isn't mandatory, it definitely helps. This is a challenging trek with multiple high passes over 5,000 meters, such as Kyamar La and Yalung Nyau La. Good physical fitness, mental endurance, and some prep hikes at altitude can make your experience safer and more enjoyable.
The Changthang Plateau is home to rare Himalayan wildlife. You might spot Kiangs (wild asses), blue sheep, marmots, and even the elusive snow leopard if you’re lucky. The region is also a paradise for bird watchers, especially around Tso Moriri, where black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese are frequently seen.
The ideal window is mid-June to early September. During this period, the snow has melted from the high passes, the weather is more stable, and the trails are accessible. The days are sunny and dry, but nights can still be very cold due to the high altitude. Avoid the monsoon months and early snowfalls.
Nights can get extremely cold, especially at camps above 4,800 meters. Even in peak season, temperatures can drop to -5°C or lower. It’s crucial to carry a proper -10°C rated sleeping bag, wear thermal layers, and have a good quality tent to stay warm and comfortable.
Expect to be completely off-grid during the trek. There is no mobile network, Wi-Fi, or internet connectivity for the entire route. This disconnection can be a blessing—it’s a chance to unplug and fully immerse yourself in nature without distractions. Inform your loved ones beforehand, and enjoy the digital detox.
Nutritious and filling vegetarian meals are served throughout the trek. The menu typically includes dal, rice, vegetables, soups, and snacks like tea and biscuits. Special attention is given to high-altitude nutrition, with energy-boosting meals and hydration. Let the organizers know in advance if you have dietary preferences or restrictions.
Solo trekkers are welcome, and many operators offer fixed departures where solo travelers can join a group. Going with a group is safer and more enjoyable in this remote terrain. However, you’ll always be accompanied by guides, porters, and support staff even if you're traveling alone.
Absolutely! The trail passes through remote Ladakhi and Changpa nomadic settlements. You’ll witness traditional yak herding, ancient monasteries like Tiri, and Tibetan prayer flags fluttering across high passes. These moments offer a rare insight into a disappearing way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Yes, altitude sickness is a major concern due to the high elevations, with passes going above 5,400 meters. Proper acclimatization in Leh (2–3 days minimum) is non-negotiable. The itinerary is designed to ascend gradually, but symptoms like headache or nausea should be taken seriously. Always communicate with your guide if you feel unwell.
There are no charging points once you start the trek from Rumtse. Bring power banks or solar chargers if you need to keep your devices running. It’s also smart to keep your electronics insulated in the cold to preserve battery life. Minimalism works best—carry only what’s necessary.
Yes, you can join the trek to Rumtse to Tso Moriri. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
