At Escape2explore, we’re committed to providing a memorable and safe trekking experience in the majestic Himalayas. The terrain and weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so please follow these essential do’s and don’ts to ensure a successful and enjoyable trek.
Do’s:
Listen to Your Guide: Our professional guides are experts in Himalayan trekking. Always follow their instructions and trust their judgment, especially in tricky or high-altitude areas.
Acclimatize Properly: The Himalayas mean high altitudes, which require proper acclimatization. We’ll ensure a gradual ascent, but it’s crucial to take things slow and follow the itinerary to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water and rest when needed.
Wear the Right Gear: The Himalayas can be cold, even in summer. Wear layered clothing, including thermal wear, waterproof jackets, and sturdy, insulated trekking boots with good grip. Bring a hat and gloves to protect yourself from cold winds.
Hydrate and Eat Well: Dehydration happens faster at high altitudes. Keep sipping water throughout the trek and eat enough food to maintain your energy. Our team will provide regular breaks to recharge.
Use Trekking Poles: Himalayan trails can be steep and uneven, so using trekking poles can greatly reduce the strain on your knees and help you maintain balance.
Respect Local Culture: The Himalayan region is home to diverse local communities with rich cultural traditions. Respect the customs, interact politely with locals, and follow any guidelines provided by your guide.
Carry Essential Items: Bring items like sunscreen (even in the snow!), lip balm, sunglasses, and a first-aid kit with altitude sickness medication. It’s better to be prepared for the high-altitude sun and cold winds
Be Environmentally Conscious: The Himalayas are pristine and need our care. Follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ policy by carrying back all waste, respecting wildlife, and leaving nature undisturbed.
Don’ts:
Don’t Ignore Altitude Sickness Symptoms: If you feel dizzy, have headaches, or feel nauseous, inform your guide immediately. Ignoring these signs can lead to serious health issues. We can adjust the pace or descent if needed.
Don’t Rush or Overexert Yourself: The key to trekking in the Himalayas is steady progress. Don’t rush ahead, as it can strain your body at high altitudes. Take breaks when needed and walk at a pace that’s comfortable for you.
Don’t Pack Unnecessary Items: Light backpacks make for easier treks. We’ll help you with a packing list, so don’t bring heavy or non-essential items that will weigh you down on steep climbs.
Avoid Trekking in Dangerous Weather: The Himalayan weather can change rapidly. We monitor conditions closely, but if your guide suggests delaying the trek due to rain, snow, or windstorms, trust their decision.
Don’t Wander Off Alone: The vast Himalayan landscape can be disorienting. Always stick with the group, and let your guide know if you need to stop or take a break. Avoid exploring unfamiliar areas on your own.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking: Consuming alcohol or smoking can worsen the effects of altitude sickness and lower your stamina. It’s best to avoid them before and during the trek for your safety and well-being.
Don’t Harm the Environment: Avoid littering or causing damage to the natural surroundings. The Himalayas are fragile, so we ask you to be mindful and carry back any waste to designated disposal areas.

The Tarsar Marsar Trek in Kashmir is famous for its breathtaking alpine lakes, lush meadows, and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Unlike other treks, it offers a unique experience of walking alongside crystal-clear lakes, crossing vibrant grasslands, and camping under star-lit skies, making it a perfect blend of adventure and serenity.
This trek is classified as moderate, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced trekkers. It involves walking around 6-8 km daily over a span of 7 days, with gradual ascents and descents. The highest altitude you reach is approximately 13,500 ft, so good fitness is recommended for a smooth trekking experience.
The best time for the trek is from June to September when the trails are covered with lush greenery and the lakes reflect the blue sky. During this period, the weather remains pleasant with daytime temperatures around 15°C and cooler nights. Avoid trekking in winter, as the region experiences heavy snowfall.
Expect pleasant days with temperatures ranging between 10-20°C. However, nights can get chilly, dropping to around 0-5°C, especially at higher altitudes. Rain is possible in July and August, so carrying waterproof gear is essential. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so always be prepared for sudden temperature drops.
This trek follows a camping-based itinerary, meaning you’ll stay in high-quality tents at scenic campsites near lakes and meadows. The tents are shared (usually 2-3 people per tent) and come with sleeping bags and mats. At Aru, the base camp, a guesthouse or homestay is usually arranged for a comfortable start to the trek.
No prior trekking experience is necessary, but good physical fitness is essential. Since the trek involves walking on uneven terrain and gradual ascents, preparing with cardio exercises, brisk walking, and basic strength training a month before the trek will help. If you have any medical conditions, it’s best to consult a doctor before planning.
The major highlights include the mesmerizing Tarsar and Marsar Lakes, which change colors with the sunlight. Walking through the lush Shekhawas meadows, witnessing the beauty of Sundarsar Lake, and the stunning sunrise views over the Kolahi Glacier are unforgettable. The remote landscapes, wildlife sightings, and cultural interactions with locals add to the charm.
The trek starts from Aru Valley, which is around 12 km from Pahalgam, Kashmir. To reach here, take a flight to Srinagar Airport, then drive to Pahalgam (about 4-5 hours). From Pahalgam, a short taxi ride takes you to Aru. Most trek organizers arrange transport from Srinagar for convenience.
You’ll be provided with freshly cooked vegetarian meals throughout the trek. Breakfast includes parathas, bread, porridge, or eggs, while lunch and dinner feature rice, chapati, dal, vegetables, and sometimes pasta or noodles. Hot tea and snacks are also provided. Meals are designed to be nutritious, ensuring you have the energy to complete the trek.
There are no medical facilities en route, but trek leaders carry a basic first aid kit, oxygen cylinders, and emergency medicines. If you feel unwell, the team will assist you accordingly. For serious emergencies, the nearest medical help is in Pahalgam or Srinagar. It’s advisable to carry personal medications and consult a doctor before the trek.
This region is home to Himalayan marmots, langurs, ibex, and various migratory birds. If you’re lucky, you may spot the elusive Kashmiri stag (Hangul) or a Himalayan fox. The area around Marsar Lake is particularly rich in birdlife, so carrying binoculars is a good idea for bird-watching enthusiasts.
Yes, you can join the trek to Tarsar Marsar. The trip’s difficulty level is moderate and can be attained without someone’s support. Wear robust footwear, and comfortable clothes, and maintain basic fitness to complete the trek.
