Bheemeshwari is one of Karnataka's most beautiful, quiet places. It is located beside the banks of the Cauvery River and is known for its lush green landscapes, wildlife, and adventure activities. Situated 100 kilometres from Bengaluru, this place can be considered more of an adventure destination and a peace destination. And so is Bheemeshwari, the influential eco-tourism centre in South India replete with lush forests and the Cauvery River flowing through its banks.
Bheemeshwari is connected much to Indian mythology, especially to Mahabharata. It is one of the biggest epics in Hindu literature. According to Mahabharata, the five brothers of Pandav, during their exile for 13 years, moved through various regions. According to some people, Bheema, the strongest of these five brothers, is said to have passed his period in this area. This name, "Bheemeshwari," comes, people believe, because he came to this place.
Another mythological association of the river Cauvery flows through Bheemeshwari. This river has remained sacred for thousands of years in Hinduism. Sacredness is talked about by the temple and rituals on the bank, but legends of this river add to the richness of the area's cultural heritage.
Bheemeshwari was once an excellent Cauvery River valley confluence of agriculture and trade activities at the heart of Karnataka. Such fertile lands have been brought under the influence of various South Indian dynasties such as Gangas, Cholas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire. Every one of them has left their mark in the region.
Gangas: The Ganga dynasty conquered the region very early (4th-10th century CE). They built their fortress in and around the areas surrounding the river Cauvery. Their periods are marked by agricultural prosperity; the river irrigated many parts through their constructed systems. The Gangas were also great patrons of Jainism, and remnants of their architecture and culture linger in the nearby towns and temples.
Cholas: This region was controlled by the mighty Chola dynasty from the 9th to the 13th century CE in the medieval period. The Cholas are known for administrative brilliance and architectural grandeur and had established temple towns in Cauvery. Although Bheemeshwari has no monumental Chola architecture, it is close to towns that were thronged by the Cholas and thus moulded its cultural and economic life .
Hoysalas: The Hoysala dynasty, which was known for its superb temple architecture prevailing between the 11th and 14th century CE, also ruled over this place. The kings brought stability and prosperity to the Cauvery basin and caused a great explosion of art, culture, and religion. It is still evident from the effort and commitment that can be seen in the temples surrounding Bheemeshwari.
Vijayanagara Empire: This falls under the expanding Vijayanagara Empire, 14th to 17th century CE. Their economic focus on trade and agriculture has made the Cauvery River survive as the hub of regional economies. In addition to their great contributions to trade and agriculture, the Vijayanagara kings were great devotees of Hinduism; most temples surrounding Bheemeshwari have reflected their styles.
The fall of local kingdoms and the rise of British colonialism brought tremendous change in Bheemeshwari and other places. The administration realized that the Cauvery River was essential to irrigation and agriculture. Several projects were initiated to tap its potential so that fertile lands along its banks could continue unhampered.
Bheemeshwari forests, with their rich bio-diversity, had already turned out to be a hunting ground for British officials and the local royalties. Here, the locales had seen plentiful tigers, leopards, and elephants, and thus the place was in great demand by game hunters. These later declined toward the end of the colonial rules as conservation came to the forefront of importance.
Temples and Rituals: The temples of local deities and the major gods Shiva and Vishnu have reflected the Cholas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara kings. Here, the rituals are performed mainly around the Cauvery River, which remained unchanged for centuries and preserved a rich cultural heritage.
Cauvery River: Being the lifeline of Bheemeshwari, the Cauvery River has been in the middle of the region's history and culture. It is considered sacred in Hindu tradition and has attached many fairs and rituals to it. The Kaveri Sankramana festival occurs every year, which draws thousands of people to the riverbanks to perform some religious rituals.
Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary: Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary lies within Bheemeshwari and has more than 1,000 square kilometres of vast stretches of flora and fauna. It is the habitat of leopards, elephants, wild boars, and even the very elusive smooth-coated otters. It is also a paradise for the birdwatcher , with more than 200 species of fish, eagles, herons, and kingfishers. Jungle safaris, trekking, and bird watching would give visitors an excellent chance to engage in raw nature.
Doddamakali: Doddamakali is a very peaceful retreat placed upstream of Bheemeshwari. The offbeat destination, covered by the Cauvery River and dense forests, usually turns out to be a favourite among campers and nature lovers. This forms an excellent fishing and nature photography retreat for that respite from the city's concrete jungles. Its serenity level also makes it an ideal place for unwinding amidst unspoiled beauty.
Galibore Fishing Camp: It's a fishing camp covering 16 kilometres of the area from Bheemeshwari, primarily known for Mahseer fishing, where it follows a catch-and-release policy to maintain sustainability but doesn't sacrifice the adventure. The destination also offers treks, birdwatching, and coracle rides along the Cauvery River. It affords an extraordinary chance to live in comfort with nature simultaneously in relatively rustic settings.
Muthathi Village: Muthathi is a pictorial riverside village a few kilometres from Bheemeshwari and full of spiritual and natural significance. Here is the temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This is ideal for those who enjoy the sounds of flowing waters or chirping birds, creating serenity for picnics and strolls.
Shivanasamudra Falls: Shivanasamudra Falls is a twin waterfall comprised of Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, 80 km from Bheemeshwari. The falls are provided by the Cauvery River, and they look very majestic in the rain. The tourists can witness the power of the cascading water, take some excellent snaps from the scenic locales, and enjoy the luscious greenery all around. This place also features one of Asia's first hydroelectric power stations.
Sangama: Sangama is the confluence of the Arkavathi and Cauvery rivers, 40 km from Bheemeshwari. This is an excellent spot for peaceful picnic walks and other riverbank activities. Coupled with soothing sounds of rivers merging and coracle rides to places like Mekedatu, it is heaven on earth with greenery and lovely views during the monsoons for nature lovers and photographers.
Mekedatu: About nearly 50 km distance from Bheemeshwari, on the Cauvery, stands a scenic gorge, which can be reached at Mekedatu. Translated, the name simply means goat's leap in that one famous legend according to which the local goat leaps between the stones to escape its nemesis- the tiger. One can cross over the rocks, and have some fun amidst the scenic view of the great waters while rushing through the channel.
Chunchi Falls: Chunchi Falls is also about 35 km from Bheemeshwari. A serene sojourn with misty falls amidst rugged landscapes and lush greenery, which is said to be at its best after the rains when the water flows are at their peak. It is an excellent place for picnics and nature photography, though one needs to be cautious near rocky terrain.
Talakad: The ancient town with an interesting history tale lies 80 km away-Talakad. Famous for sand-covered temples and mythological value, Panchalinga Darshana is a ritual that happens once in 12 years, and people from all nooks and corners visit there. Talakad offers a perfect blending of history, culture, and nature.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary: Located 90 km from Bheemeshwari, near Mysuru, this Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is an avian lover's haven. This sprawls over tiny islands that dot the Cauvery River and is peppered with exotic birds such as painted storks, spotted-billed pelicans, and black-headed ibis. Those interested can take a boat ride to admire the birds and their habitats more closely, making this more of a pleasure trip for nature lovers.
Hogenakkal Falls: It is about 100 km from Bheemeshwari and is sometimes even known as the "Niagara of India." Falls are particularly famous for medicinal mineral baths and coracle rides. The falls lie amidst rugged cliffs and greenery, presenting a treat to the eyes during monsoons.
Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta: Bilikal Rangaswamy Betta is about 60kms from Bheemeshwari. The hill station has been named the temple of Lord Ranganatha Swamy, which rests on the top. It is one of the great treks providing adventure lovers with thrilling views of the surrounding forest and valley ranges.
Kanakapura: Kanakapura, an erstwhile small town, now has the silk weavers' industry, ancient temples , and pretty scenery. It is nearly 40 km from Bheemeshwari, an adventure hub that promotes trekking, kayaking, and rock climbing. Thus, it becomes one of the best destinations to be visited as a day tour.
Savandurga Hill: 60 km from Bheemeshwari lies Savandurga, one of the largest monolithic hills in Asia, a favourite spot for trekking as well as rock climbing. The climb is tough but breathtakingly beautiful, with an all-round view of the surrounding countryside. The hill houses the Narasimha Swamy Temple, adding spiritual flavour to the outing.
Kokrebellur Pelicanry: Another one-stop village is Kokrebellur, about 60 km from Bheemeshwari, which thrives on the friendly cohabitation of humans with birds. It's an ideal nesting site for breeding Spot-billed Pelicans, Painted Storks, and more, giving a feel of nature's symbiotic relationship with mankind, surely not to be missed by bird enthusiasts and conservation-loving souls.
Visitation during the winter, from October to February, would be ideal for a visit to Bheemeshwari. The climate is very good, between 15° and 25°C, which supports trekking, fishing, or wildlife trips. Much complements this, along with the lush greenery and the flowing Cauvery River.
It becomes very hot from March to May, at times reaching a peak temperature of 35°C, though it still cools down during the morning and evening periods. It is quite a good time for fishing and other river-related water games, etc.
Extremely heavy fall witnesses during the monsoon season, between June and September. This region turns out to be a complete green paradise. The falls near the Cauvery River get filled with rain, but these falls turn out to be beautiful and peaceful. Trekking is not carried out since the trails are quite slick.
