Its history, however, is rich with an interesting evolution over the years driven by ancient civilizations, colonization, and industrialization. The history of Dandeli goes back to ancient days, and in ancient days, Dandeli was settled by the vast expanse of forests which shielded the first settlers from the climatic situation of that era. You can even travel by air to complete Belgaum Airport (100 km) or Goa's Dabolim Airport (150 km) if you are travelling from other states of India. • By Train

  The nearest railway station to Dandeli is Alnavar Junction, which is 35 km away from Dandeli. Alnavar Junction is a small but well-connected railway station to cities like Bangalore, Hubli, Pune, and Mumbai. The second choice is Londa Junction (50 km from here), which is train-connected and one of the best railway stations to visit Dandeli for travellers. Alnavar and Londa are accessed by taxi, bus, and auto-rickshaw transport to travel towards Dandeli. For international and domestic tourists from other Indian states, a railway journey to Hubli (75 km) or Belgaum (100 km) followed by road travel is also advised.

  Since Dandeli town is encircled on all sides by rivers and streams, Dandeli town cuisines are fresh fish preparations as a speciality. The richest of their preparation is Kane Rava Fry, i.e., ladyfish marination in semolina, it is a blend of sea spices and shallow-fried to crunch and golden brown. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inner side, a heaven for any seafood delicacy lover.

• Pandi Curry (Pork Curry)

  Another homestyle hit presented here, Pandi Curry is a chunky, porky curry spiced with tribal spice, black pepper, and the rather exotic-sounding kachampuli (vinegar extract). It will be good on akki roti (rice flour flatbread) or steamed rice, with an earthy, pungent flavour of the surroundings.

• Kayi Holige (Coconut Obbattu)

  No Dandeli meal is ever complete without dessert. Kai Holige or Coconut Obbattu is a dessert in which coconut-cardamom-jaggery is stuffed within a soft and thin wheat flour roti. It is a festival dessert and one of my favourite sweets. Dandeli food is a careless combination of spices, flavours, and local culture.
