History of Karwar

Karwar has thousands of years of history and, in the earlier stages, was an important trading harbour on the western seaboard. From an important point in the Arabian Sea, Karwar, for nearly a century, was one of India's major port cities. Now, in all that history, from time to time, Karwar passed into new hands, or rather into diverse hands. After the influential British Empire invaders arrived, it merged partially into another Indian state of Maharashtra.

It was one of the prime ports in maritime trade before the colonial period when the British developed the port as a great shipping centre for the commodity. Foreign traders flocked into the town, eventually becoming a melting pot of several cultures. Karwar had shipbuilding throughout the British period and exported mainly timber and spices. Another identity the town has taken upon itself is of the Maratha Navy and a legend in the form of Kanhoji Angre, who was the Maratha admiral of the place during the early 17th century. He refused to accept the British East India Company's claim over the seas and declared himself as the overlord over the seas too. The present remains of its identity as a historical place, which one can see in the ruins of its fortifications, the temples, and the architecture of the days of the colony.

Beaches to visit in Karwar

Some of the towns of Karwar are said to house some of the most pretty and serene beaches along the coast of India. Even though less business-oriented than their very own counterparts right at the doorstep neighbour, Goa beaches make the ideal destination for those who wish to see the beach in all its unadulterated, pristine glory without hordes of visitors.

1. Rabindranath Tagore Beach

The Rabindranath Tagore Beach will be the nearest to the town and be on both sides of the town centre. It is named after the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who visited this town in the early 20th century. It is quite peaceful and serene and wonderful for strolling in the evenings and sunbathing when the spectacular sunset starts to appear. On the other side of this beach, a statue of Tagore has been erected as a symbolic step in reverence for his loving attachment towards Karwar. This is the final abode of serenity with soft waves and hills.

2. Kudle Beach

Arguably the purest and most serene beach along Karwar, it symbolizes some 8 kilometres off the town of Karwar. Providing one with crystal waters and soothing waves makes this a fun sunbathing or swimming escapade heaven. The isolation has a form in that it makes this location more decongested compared to the rest, where many beaches with crowding tend to dominate their own areas at coastal ones. Nature photography enthusiasts cannot miss out on the way to come for it.

3. Om Beach

Om Beach is one of the most characteristic popular beaches in that region. It lies 30km from Karwar. The name is given to the shape bearing a resemblance or semblance that is vaguely reminiscent of an Om symbol belonging to the Hindu religion. It caters more like a destination that appeals to that adventure as well as spiritual questers. It gives you that level of peace with just a view you would want, and you do get one of the less important beaches in India, giving you scope to do parasailing, jet-skiing, etc.

4. Devbagh Beach

This is one of the most silent and wonderful beaches in Karwar. It owes this property due to its geographical location, lying at the junction between Kali River and the Arabian Sea. This peace was filled by Devbagh beach in the craze of golden sands, so staying here for such a tranquil vacation would be ideal. Many resorts and houseboats on this beach at this time give luxurious comfort with beautiful sights of the house along with silent waves, making it the perfect place for swimming, having picnics, and taking a nice walk all over the beaches.

5. Majali Beach

Majali Beach happens to be the least visited place by tourists; it is just about 7 kilometres from Karwar. As one of the best places for those requiring quietude and time for solitude within nature, crystal-clear waters, combined with scintillating landscapes, make up Majali Beach, aptly suited for somebody looking for a peaceful time for the mind.

6. Swarna River Beach

This beach lies at the mouth of the Swarna River. Here, the river has to get married to the Arabian Sea. This brings in a beautiful, interesting aquatic spectrum and bird and photogenic interest when scanning through binoculars or camera lenses. There are long walks along the coasts or sitting near the river banks to celebrate natural beauty.
