History of Kotagiri

Kotagiri is one of the oldest of the Nilgiri hill stations with a history of two centuries. There was an aboriginal tribe who had their own culture, way of life, and superb embroidery. They originally inhabited Kotagiri. Todas lived in harmony with nature and led a buffalo and hill domestication life as hills were sacred to them. Its very name "Kotagiri" is said to have been derived from the Toda for "Kota-Keri," i.e., "Kotas' mountain," but another aboriginal race who had owned it in remote ages. During the early decades of the 19th century, Kotagiri was captured by the British when the British East India Company captured the Nilgiris after the defeat of Tipu Sultan. It was in 1819 that John Sullivan, who was then the collector of Coimbatore, was impressed by the salubrious climate and the natural beauty of the Nilgiri Hills. Sullivan made Kotagiri a hill resort, built roads, and colonial-style bungalows, and promoted tea plantations. Sullivan's enterprise brought huge numbers of British planters and administrators to Kotagiri to spend the salubrious climate as a welcome break from the heat of the plains.

During the mid-19th century, tea and coffee plantations started sprouting in Kotagiri, which changed its economy and geography. British planters built large tea plantations, of which the majority still exist today. Traces of colonial rule can be even seen today in the topography of Kotagiri, as old churches, heritage bungalows, and tea factories speak of its British past. Kotagiri was the initial choice of British bureaucrats until the hill station craze struck Ooty with better connectivity. It was a large summer resort and plantation workers' base, nonetheless. Even now, the John Sullivan Memorial at the village of Kannerimukku near Kotagiri is a reminder of the person responsible for the evolution of the Nilgiris. Since it attained freedom, Kotagiri has managed to keep its serene and less commercialized beauty in comparison to Ooty and Coonoor. The region continues to struggle to make a living from tea estates, ecotourism, and trekking, attracting tourists who require a peaceful retreat in the folds of nature. The combination of tribal culture, colonial history, and terrain makes Kotagiri an interesting destination to visit with heritage still embracing its foggy hills and green valleys.
