About Mullayanagiri Peak Trek:
Mullayanagiri Peak is one of the favourite treks in Karnataka, which falls in the Chikmagalur district. This place offers serene vistas and landscapes that lead one to the highest point of Karnataka, which reaches a height of 1,930 meters above the surface level. From its summits, panoramic views enclose the Western Ghats and the coffee plantation. Therefore, it has become one of the favourites among trekkers and lovers of nature. The Mullayanagiri trek from the base up to Mullayanagiri is approximately 3 Km. Trek trails are well marked, which has made them perfect for novices and experienced trekkers since this hike level is pretty moderate and gets steep and challenging sometimes.
The best time to visit the Mullayanagiri trek will be from September to February when the climate will become cool enough to trek. The place does not look to be a long trek from bottom to top, it is there to be in your sight, and from a rich fall between forest and a misty hill, all has been a treat to your eyes. The reason is that the Sunrises Mullayanga Ridge hike trek often goes to quite some famous as the trekkers start pretty early to catch a breathtaking view of the sun's rise atop. If you are searching for an experience that is more than an immersive one, here are the campsites near Mullayangiri. It is one of the best spots if you love adventures, as you could either trek out from Bangalore or walk through the Chikmagalur trails for an unforgettable trek into Mullayanagiri, blending nature and serenity perfectly.

If you're looking for an adventurous yet scenic trek, the Mullayanagiri Trek is a must-do for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Nestled in the Western Ghats, Mullayanagiri Peak is the highest point in Karnataka, at an elevation of 1,930 meters (6,330 feet). The trek takes you through lush greenery, cool breezes, and breathtaking landscapes, making it one of the most rewarding experiences for trekkers in South India.
In this blog, we'll explore everything you need to know about the Mullayanagiri Trek, from the trek distance and trail details to the best time to visit and tips to make your journey more memorable. Let’s dive into this adventure!
Located in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, Mullayanagiri Hills offer an ideal getaway from city life, providing tranquillity in nature’s lap. This region is well-known for its coffee plantations, which you will pass by as you make your way to the base of the trek. The Mullayanagiri Peak is part of the Baba Budangiri Range, and the combination of its height and stunning views makes it a top spot for trekking.
The Mullayanagiri trek distance is approximately 3 to 4 kilometres one way, depending on the starting point. While this may sound like a short trek, the trail’s steep ascent can make it feel longer. The trek usually takes 2-3 hours to reach the peak and an additional 1-2 hours for the descent. The path is well-marked, though challenging due to rocky patches and some narrow sections.
Starting from the Sarpadhari base, the trek immediately introduces you to the greenery of the Mullayanagiri Hills. The trail is filled with the sights and sounds of nature birds chirping, the rustling of leaves, and the refreshing breeze of the Ghats.
First Section: The initial part of the trek is relatively moderate, with gradual ascents. As you go higher, you’ll start to notice panoramic views of the Chikmagalur region. The lush coffee plantations and verdant forest areas give you the perfect backdrop for photography.
Middle Section: The trail becomes steeper as you climb further. You may find narrow sections where you must be careful, especially during the monsoon season when the rocks become slippery. Along the way, you might spot some exotic birds, adding excitement for nature enthusiasts.
Final Ascent: The final stretch of the Mullayanagiri trek takes you closer to the peak, where you’ll find the small Mullappa Swamy Temple. This section is steep but extremely rewarding. The wind picks up as you approach the top, and you can feel the fresh air revitalizing your energy.
The best time to do the Mullayanagiri trek is between September and February. The weather during this period is excellent, making climbing more accessible and enjoyable. Avoid trekking during the monsoons (June to August) as the trail becomes muddy and slippery, making the trek difficult and risky.
If you enjoy misty surroundings, the post-monsoon period, from September to November, is ideal. The Mullayanagiri Hills are often covered in a blanket of mist, creating a magical atmosphere. In the winter months (December to February), the skies are clear, giving you spectacular views of the surroundings.
Good trekking shoes: The trail can be steep and rocky, so comfortable and sturdy shoes with a good grip are essential.
Water: Carry at least 2 litres to stay hydrated during the trek.
Snacks: Energy bars, fruits, and dry fruits are great options to keep your energy up.
Sunscreen and Hat: The sun can be intense, especially in the afternoons, so it's essential to protect yourself.
Rain Jacket: If you're trekking during the monsoon or post-monsoon period, carry a rain jacket in case of sudden showers.
Trekking Pole: A trekking pole can be helpful during the steep sections.
Upon reaching the Mullayanagiri Peak, you'll be greeted by breathtaking 360-degree views of the Mullayanagiri Hills and the surrounding valleys. On a clear day, you can spot the Baba Budangiri range and other peaks in the distance. The feeling of standing at the highest point in Karnataka is exhilarating and well worth the effort.
At the summit is a small Mullappa Swamy Temple dedicated to a sage who is believed to have meditated here centuries ago. The temple is simple but adds a spiritual touch to the place. Many trekkers take moments to catch their breath, relax, and enjoy the peace before starting their descent.
While the Mullayanagiri trek is the main attraction, there are other places worth visiting around Chikmagalur:

The Mullayanagiri trek is considered a moderate trek. While the distance is relatively short, the steep incline and rocky paths make it challenging, especially for beginners.
