Kemmangundi or the 'Ooty of Karnataka' is a serene hill station situated in the Chikkamagaluru district of the state of Karnataka in India. Kemmangundi is situated in the Western Ghats mountains at Baba Budangiri mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,434 meters (4,705 feet) above mean sea level. This scenic area is famous for its scenic beauty, green forest, hill fog, and waterfall drops. The cool climate and rich biodiversity make it an ideal retreat for nature lovers, trekkers, and those seeking solace away from bustling city life. With its untouched beauty and unspoiled environment, Kemmangundi has gained immense popularity among tourists and adventure enthusiasts.
The name ‘Kemmangundi’ has an interesting etymology. It is derived from two Kannada words: ‘Kempu’ meaning red and ‘Gundi’ meaning pit or valley. This area is thought to have been given this name because of the red colour of the soil of this area, and the natural terrain of this area. Kemmangundi was a summer palace of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the king of Mysore. The Maharaja was so enamoured of the peace of this hill station that this was converted into a summer resort. Subsequently, the Karnataka Department of Horticulture took up the task of caring for the land and saw to it that although nature is not lost, it is safe and secure. Kemmangundi is highly significant being one of the most scenic hill stations of Karnataka. It is not only a tourist spot but also one of the places of attraction of the Karnataka ecotourism project. The region is richly blessed with diversified flora and fauna with hardly any endemic plants figuring in the list.
Kemmangundi, this gem nestled among the hills of Baba Budangiri, Karnataka, is a heaven for nature lovers. Famous for its green pastures, hill country, and nature, Kemmangundi is an experience away from the chaos of urban life. It has some of the most picturesque natural spots that welcome tourists with their beauty, peace, and adventure. A few of the most popular locations in Kemmangundi are Z Point, Hebbe Falls, Kalhatti Falls, Shanti Falls, and Rock Garden. All of these places are unique in one or another way and they do hold some unique special significance, so Kemmangundi is one such place which is a compulsive place to visit for nature lovers as well as adventure enthusiasts also.
Z Point: Located at one of the most picturesque viewpoints of Kemmangundi, Z Point is famous for its sunrise and sunset. It can be accessed by a short but challenging trek involving hill track downhill walks, narrow paths, and dense coverages. The approximately 3 km long trek begins somewhere close to Raj Bhavan and provides trekkers with rough landscapes and foggy trails to walk upon. The journey to the Z Point is as stunning as the location. Mountainous weather, singing birds, and breezy days create a fantasy setting in the environment that rejuvenates the body and soul.
Hebbe Falls: Hebbe Falls is the most scenic of Kemmanagundi waterfalls which fascinates visitors with its waterfalling grandeur and peaceful surroundings. Hebbe Falls lies around 10 km from town and can be reached through a hair-raising jeep drive and a short trek. The trek itself over coffee plantations, lush forests, and hill tracks is an experience. Hebbe Falls is a two-tiered one comprising Dodda Hebbe (Big Hebbe) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Hebbe). It drops from a height of about 168 meters, and the water splashes upon the boulders below it making an awesome view. The water plunges into a serene crystal pool after taking the glorious leap. The bubbling of the water bubbles together with the virgin surroundings is a serene experience.
Kalhatti Falls: Kalhatti Falls or Kalahasti Falls is another lovely waterfall close to Kemmangundi, which not only looks lovely but is also renowned for its religious and historical importance. The waterfalls fall from a height of around 122 meters and are lined with dense forests and boulder outcrops, which are the reasons behind the place being so serene and magical. It is what separates Kalhatti Falls from the rest that it is connected to Hindu mythology. The myths claim that the waterfalls were frequent places where ancient sage Agastya used to meditate. There is an ancient temple of Lord Veerabhadra, who is the fiery incarnation of Lord Shiva, in the vicinity of the waterfall bottom.
Shanti Falls: Living up to its name, Shanti Falls is a quiet hill that would serve as an ideal retreat for trekking adventurers who want to be as far away as possible from the city chaos. A cascading small waterfall situated at the top of the trek path to Z Point, it's the perfect stop for trekking adventurers who need to unwind and refresh in calmness and tranquillity. The waterfall owes its existence to a natural spring and runs down over boulders in a soothing fashion in the serene and idyllic environment. Shanti Falls water is crystal-clear and flows over a small puddle down below, which has a hole to dip your feet in as well.
Kemmangundi, the hill resort of Karnataka located in Western Ghats, is an adventurer's paradise. Its lush green blanket of forests, rolling hills, and stunning waterfalls is a rollercoaster ride of an adventure drive for off-road activity seekers and adventure tourists. Its highly sought-after trekking routes to trek at Kemmangundi are Kemmangundi Trek, Z Point Trek, and Hebbe Falls Trek. The treks provide one with a whole new range of experiences from rock climbs to viewpoints to forest walks of the adrenalin-rush variety.
1. Kemmangundi Trek
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult
Route Description: The Kemmangundi Trek is a trek that subjects one to forests, rolling hills, and boulder landscapes, and hence is a thrilling but difficult experience. The trek starts from the foothills encircling the Raj Bhavan in Kemmangundi and goes through dense cover and grassland, slowly climbing up to the top. The summit offers a bird's eye view of the Western Ghats with the valley and extensive coffee plantations below it rolling away into the distance. October to March would be the best time to try this trek with good weather and the scenery being at its lushest green.
2. Z Point Trek
Distance: About 3 kilometres one-way
Scenic Beauty: The Z Point Trek is a moderately short but satisfying trek that provides one with breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. The trek begins near the Kemmangundi Raj Bhavan and leads one through bad terrain, grassland, and boulder outcrops. The trek is extremely popular for sunrise and sunset views, and nature lovers and photographers come to the location in large numbers. On the ascent, the trekkers are treated to a sight spectacle of the valley below, which is hidden in cloud and mist, and which adds that touch of magic to the experience. The climb is the final phase of the trek, but the view from the Z Point is all the agony worth.

Z Point: The most explored spot in Kemmangundi, Z Point boasts of a divine sight of the Western Ghats. Best photographed at the time of sunrise or sunset when oranges and pinks dominate the sky. Extremely hilly to travel to Z Point but worth the trouble with the hill mist and greens.
Hebbe Falls: Hebbe Falls is a beautiful fall in Kemmangundi forest. A two-tiered fall—Dodda Hebbe (big one) and Chikka Hebbe (little one). Best photos are taken after monsoon when falls are full. Coffee plantations and rich forest scenery add to its beauty.
Shanti Falls: Less crowded, Shanti Falls is a serene location perfect for long exposure. The gentle sound of water amidst dense jungles is a scenic beauty that is best enjoyed through nature photography.
Kemmangundi Peak: A hike to Kemmangundi Peak offers one a bird's-eye perspective of the rolling hills. The top is an ideal point to position the entire stretch of the Western Ghats, particularly the dawn mist.
Baba Budangiri Hills: Baba Budangiri Hills are close to Kemmangundi, and they offer a picturesque mix of hillland and verdant valleys. The hills feature prominent rock outcrops, coffee estates, and breathtaking vistas.
