Nanemachi Waterfall Trek: A Hidden Paradise in Maharashtra

Nanemachi Waterfall Overview

The Nanemachi Waterfall is a sight for sore eyes carved by nature into one of the mystical horrors of Majha Maharashtra. Hidden deep in the forests of Raigad district, the site has allure for various kinds of adventure seekers, trekking enthusiasts, and nature lovers due to its breathtaking beauty, pristine aura, and exciting trekking path. The waterfall gushes from an enormous height into a mesmerizing pool surrounded by blue-green foliage and towering cliffs. When you see the clear water rushing down into a naturally beguiled lay-back area, it becomes a tranquil stretch for all of them seeking peace along nature's gentle folds.

In comparison to other famous waterfalls of Maharashtra, the Nanemachi Waterfall remains irregularly untouched, thus serving as a perfect hidden escape route for many wanting to shed the ordeal of big cities. By the time trekkers get to the waterfall, they will have experienced a rather adventurous route combing in and out of dense forest, rocky terrains, and muddy trails. This picturesque route provides breathtaking viewpoints to take in the earth's calmly flaunting beauty in all its raw glory. The utter Olympic cover in the woodlands is the cherry on top; birds chirping around, the freshness of the damp earth, and a cool breeze are a treat to their expedition.

The ideal time for a visit to the Nanemachi Waterfall would be during the rains, the months of June to September, while the waterfall is pouring hard and presenting the best view. In this period, the whole region remains alive and green, whereas the waterfalls pour in abundance, making for spectacular sights. However, rains do turn the trek into a slippery and tough one, thus giving some warning to trekkers. Oct and Nov, after the monsoon, are a safer bet for trekking and scenic treats. There is much more than just trekking and gazing through and across the Nanemachi Waterfall, as it offers the relaxation of swimming or just enjoying a laid-back experience by the waters. The natural pool at the base of the waterfall now looks so tempting, and cool and refreshing water pours down in just the way a visitor would love to get rejuvenated post-trekking.

Many guests take a leisure dip in the pool or simply enjoy soaking in the sweet tranquillity of their surroundings. The dense cover of trees around the waterfall acts like a charm, further adding to the aura of the waterfall itself with its cosy and scenic atmosphere. Nonetheless, since this place is still a little offbeat, few tourists help keep the crowd away and create an intimate connection with nature. The downside, however, to this is limited facilities for sightseeing nearby. Visitors are to bring their essentials such as food and drink, as well as any necessary trekking gear. Travelling in groups is supported, and local guides familiar with the area are useful. Nanemachi Falls is heaven for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and photographers alike. Be it trekking, discovering hidden nature wonders, or soaking up some tranquillity under the cascading waters, this destination has it all. As more travellers learn about this beautiful destination, tourism responsibly stretches beyond the place's boundaries to preserve its raw beauty for the coming generations.

Getting There

From Mumbai, take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to exit at Khopoli, driving onward to the Khopoli-Pali Road past the small town of Pali. Here, you can get a cab to the waterfall or start trekking from Pali. The trail takes 3-4 hours through beautiful scenery to reach the waterfall but can be accessed from other directions as well. From Mumbai, the travel takes about 2-3 hours while up to 4 hours from Pune. The geographical position of Nanemachi Waterfall is significant to its attraction. The Konkan region, with its breathtaking views of landscapes, coastal beauty and verdure, serves as the perfect background for this wonder. Monsoon tourism hot spots of the Western Ghats, also called the "Sahyadri Hills," draw patrons alike from across India. Nanemachi being one of the closely guarded secrets of this region adds extra credit to its fame to be put down on the wish list of nature lovers.

The area is also rich in culture, and closer to the villages glimpses of traditional living can be found among the locals. The warm gestures by the locals, added to the solitude with the waterfall, simply create an exotic experience for the worthy million bucks spent. The natural pool formed at the base of Nanemachi Waterfall is an interesting feature worthy of note. With clear blue waters reflecting the surrounding lush green foliage, the pool creates an other-worldly atmosphere. The pool, unlike most waterfall pools with dangerous currents, is usually safe for a dip, which only adds to the allure of this hidden paradise. Caution is nevertheless advised, particularly during the monsoon months when the flow of water is high. The natural structure of the pool increases the overall attraction of the place, making it the favourite place to lay back and relax as much as it is for adventure.

  • By Trekking Route:  Adventure seekers wanting to reach this waterfall will get a thrill out of it. The trek to the waterfall is about 4-5 kilometres from the nearest village which is either Vaijanath or Mahad. The trek is quite moderate and may require certain fitness levels due to the varied terrain, river crossings, and some dense patches of forests. The duration of the walk will take about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the waterfall.  During heavy monsoons with rainfall, this trekking path looks a lot more spellbinding with its extreme greenery. This is recommended not to trek alone because it confuses first-time visitors without a local guide.

Best Time to Visit Nanemachi Waterfall

Visit to the waterfall is appreciated at any point between June and October and after rainfalls, during the post-monsoon season, for it is at these times that the waterfall is full of gush with flowing water, colourful greenery, and thereby an enthralling environment.

  • During the rainy season (June-September): The rain falls so heavily during the season of the monsoons that the waterfall becomes a mesmerizing scene. The whole area looks so green and the view is stunning. The trek during this period proves challenging but rewarding to all trekkers and adventurers. However, caution should be exercised as the trails are generally extremely slippery, and the current of the river is very strong.

  • Post Monsoon (October-November): This assures a good flow of water, still up to the grandeur of its visit. The climatic conditions are quite stable, and the lack of rain encourages trekking during October and November.  The forest surrounding the area remains green and alive, contributing an excellent habitat for photography. This is the ideal time for photography and walking with nature without fear of intense rainfalls.

  • Avoid Summer and Winter: Low water levels at the waterfall and extremely hot conditions make summer months from March to May uneventful visits. Winter (December to February) has pleasant weather, but without the sufficiency of a full-flowing, the visit does not pay off.

Last Minute Recommendations to Travelers

  • Bring the Necessities: Waterproof gear, trekking shoes, snacks, and a considerable amount of drinking water.

  • Group Travel: It is rather safer and more prudent to go trekking through these thick forests.

  • Engage a Guide: Local guides help in navigating via the best routes paying attention to safety.

  • Wake Up Early: The journey should start by early dawn at most to enjoy the waterfall's splendour.

  • Respect Nature: Do not litter, keep it clean, and be respectful to the local ecosystem. Nanemachi Waterfall is a peaceful and untouched scenic beauty that has to be seen by those who love nature and who are interested in trekking. The visit promises to be a mesmerizing experience since this waterfall can be reached through road, rail or adventurous trek.

History and local importance

The history and local importance of any region are firmly rooted in legacies, folklore, and cultural heritage that shape the identity of the place and its people. The stories that each village, town, or natural landmark has are such that they can be traced back to generations; they reflect the very ethos, traditions, and beliefs of the local communities. They often blend myth and reality to create mystique and lure tourists and researchers alike. Many such places are closely associated with the events and personalities from history, adding to their worth. Also, festivals, rituals, and practices of culture associated with these places remain important for the local inhabitant and connect them with their ancestry and traditions. One of the age-old important features of the locale's history surrounds itself with the folklore of the place.

A good number of regions have legends related to ancient sages, warriors, divine beings, or supernatural accidents, which add their mythical glory to the land. Such stories are often bound with the natural formations such as mountains, rivers, caves, or forests of the land, where ancestors of villagers say that spirits continue to dwell or that a god or hero roamed. It creates a lot of enjoyment and serves the objective of conveying moral values, historical wisdom, and spiritual teachings to younger generations. In some villages, such oral traditions are carried through storytelling sessions, where the elderly narrate great legends of bravery, love, and divine intervention to culture the collective memory.

Historically, many places acquire significance through their affinity with ancient empires, battlefields, trade routes, or religious movements. Some places simply became associated with legendary battles or the birthplace of revered leaders and saints. For instance, it's in India that several trekking destinations draw their affiliation to historical moments whereby they are the remains of fortifications established by ancient dynasties such as Rajputs, Marathas, and Cholas as strategic military outposts. Such sites at present still harbour some bits and remnants of ancient architecture, inscriptions, and artefacts that tell their tales of yore. It is indeed, a long and arduous process through which historians and archaeologists have tried to unearth buried narratives hidden. Culture such sites usually have villages stitch very deep spiritual and social ties into the milieu.

Most pilgrimage centres or temples or shrines are built around spots so-called sacred because of their association with some god or heroic figure. Such sites are celebrated each year with beautiful festivals and rituals that bear cultural significance. For example, in the visibility of some rural areas, a village can celebrate its deity heritage or that of a local hero with grand pomp and circumstance through processions, locally sung songs, dances, and collective feasting. Such activities build unity among the people and provide better chances for economic activity, as local artisans and vendors partake in the festivities. Some occasions link arts and crafts and traditional practices like weaving, pottery, folk culture, etc., to the celebrations through all generations.

In addition, these sites' most important aspect of one's local importance is that they contribute to sustaining the livelihood of local communities. Indeed, several historical and natural sites are tourist attractions that provide opportunities for employment for village people as guides, homestay hosts, handicraft sellers, or food vendors. Trekking spots draw adventure enthusiasts and tourist seekers who depend on the expertise of local guides to navigate the place and learn about its cultural and ecological importance. To a great extent, history and folklore serve to create an identity and pride along with economic well-being within the area. Moreover, usually cultural heritage goes with ecological conservation.

Almost all indigenous communities have age-old traditions that protect sacred groves, rivers, or hills, regarding them divinely as manifestations of divine energy. Such environmental activities, which are carried out since time immemorial, are similar to modern-day measures toward conservation, and sustainable coexistence with nature. In many instances, governments, and nonprofits are working along with local communities to conserve cultural heritage and biodiversity hotspots and for a better legacy, protected for the next generations. History and cultural practices go hand in hand whereby they are essential for maintaining the spirit of a place. Schools and community centres in villages often find heritage walks, storytelling or cultural performances to teach the young about their heritage roots. Initiatives like these motivate youth responsibility and belonging and translate that into action by making them active participants in the preservation and promotion of their heritage. Documentation in some cases by books and digital media or through some research projects helps store and share the stories with the wider world, thus preventing the loss of tremendous local wisdom.

History and local importance are single and multi-dimensional, including folklore, historical events, cultural traditions, and economic sustenance. The legends and myths that envelop a place grant it not only tales of intrigue but also moral guidance for their communities. The last enriches this narrative of the land with connections to past rulers, warriors, saints, and traders. Meanwhile, those cultural practices, festivals, and environmental beliefs nourish the spiritual and social fabric of nearby villages. Preservation and celebrations around such would play a great role along these lines.

The journey starts from the little town of Mahad, the nearest base for this journey in the Raigad district. From Mahad, the travellers have to go to a very small village called Nanemachi, from where the real trek into the hills begins. The distance is nearly 3 to 4 km one way, taking about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to reach the waterfall, depending on the trekker's pace and weather conditions. The path is filled with steep descents as well as ascents, all of which require careful navigation, especially after heavy rain. The terrain then becomes muddy and slippery.

Starting Point and Landmarks Along the Way

The trek begins from the town of Nanemachi where the locals also help in guiding trekkers along the route. The trail proceeds through fields and lastly enters into a compelling dense forest of big trees providing ample shade. The small trek proceeds along a narrow and nicely trodden path traversing the Western Ghats, a UNESCO Heritage site characterized by a rich treasure of biodiversity. One of the huge landmarks shall be a small stream to be crossed by trekkers. With the onset of monsoon, the stream swells and makes this part all the more pleasurable but equally tough. Trekkers will encounter some rocky patches and natural staircases made from tree roots to spice up the trip.  There is a viewpoint midway along the trek that has stunning views of surrounding hills, valleys, and waterfalls that crash over the cliffs. This is a good place to enjoy a little break, take some pictures, and enjoy the glory of nature.  The sound of gushing water becomes louder when you reach nearer to the waterfall, which acts as a beacon for trekkers who are almost there. The last 200 meters or so is all downhill on a steep slope, leaving the less stressed with an uphill battle of unshackling their thoughts of the sonnet of splendour before them: the Nanemachi Waterfall, basking in glory.

Safety Tips and Best Practices for the Trekkers

The Nanemachi Waterfall trek is not very long, but it has its share of challenges, especially during the rainy season. Some important safety tips guarantee you find yourself having an enjoyable trek:

  • Proper trekking shoes. The very fact that the path can be slippery and muddy calls for the recommendation of a sturdy pair of anti-slip shoes with good grip.

  • Leave early in the morning. This gives you a good amount of daylight for the trek and your timely return before it gets dark.

  • Take enough water and snacks with you. Although it is shady under the forest cover, high humidity can cause dehydration.

  • Avoid trekking alone. Trek in groups, or with a guide familiar with the route.

  • Use caution at river crossings. The current may become swift; pay attention when crossing streams.

  • Respect nature and wildlife. Avoid littering; do not disturb the natural habitat of flora and fauna.

  • Check the weather forecast. Heavy rains can make trails blissfully slippery; therefore, plan your trek with good weather in mind.

  • Waterproof bag. For instance, place your phone and camera in a waterproof container to avoid rain or splashes.

Flora and Fauna Encountered During the Trek

The trek to Rajmachi Trek is what nature lovers dream of: an opportunity to view the rich biodiversity of the Western Ghats. Many trees, shrubs, and medicinal plants create an avenue-like green tunnel in the dense forest lining the trail, thus enriching the trekking experience. The advent of tall mango and jackfruit trees as well as fig trees delineates the environment, while ferns and mosses thrive in high humidity. When it comes to wildlife, keep your eyes peeled for Malabar giant squirrels, langurs, and butterflies lacing the breezes through the forest. The journey is equally exhilarating for an avid birdwatcher, as sightings of varied hornbills, kingfishers, and drongos decorate the path almost throughout. During the monsoon, the area is abundant with frogs, crabs, and colourful insects, really enlivening the heterogeneous ecosystem.

Another hallmark of this trek is the numerous species of wildflowers dotting the trail, especially the post-monsoon. Amongst them, we have blue Ipomoea, yellow Murdannia, and the globally famous Karvi flowers blooming only once in seven years. Medicinal plants like Aloe Vera, Brahmi, and Turmeric plants are also found, adding to the relevant diversity in the forest. As for the waterfall itself, life forms such as small fishes, freshwater crabs, and amphibians abound in the crystal-clear pools formed at the waterfall base. The grandeur of water streaming down amid the walls of greenery encircled by the mist transports every single trekker to an ambience that is surreal and breathtaking.

A waterfall is one of nature's spectacular wonders, the sight of water cascading down a height, its descent often making for bewildering yet gorgeous patterns as the water smashes against the rocks below. The form of a waterfall is dictated by geological formations and natural forces, thus creating stunning yet diverse scenic views. Some waterfalls fall in one massive gush without any break, while others have several steps with each step lending its flair to the landscape. The height of a waterfall can vary from some meters to many hundreds depending upon its location and the nature of the terrain. Some ever-towering waterfalls like the Angel Falls, cascading from a perfect height of 3,212 feet, do tell.

Waterfalls, from large to small, are an equally majestic part of nature, the major spectacle of which might be watched from afar while some waterfalls give equally intimate and serene experiences in the hidden portions of the wilderness. Usually, underneath the waterfall, a natural pool develops, due to the continuous flow of water and the erosion of rocks. Waterfall pools come in all shapes and sizes, some shallow with gently sloping sides for wading, while others deep and clear in which you can swim. In most cases, they are pleasantly cool, thanks to their high altitude and surrounding climate. Sometimes, sparkling blue or green from minerals, mirror the colour of the sky and the surrounding foliage. At the same time, the oxygen-poor surface water is replenished with much more oxygen from the continuous inflow of fresh water. Thus, the pool becomes a fertile habitat for several species of aquatic life like little fishes, amphibians, and especially some endemic plant species that thrive in such damp conditions. Fair rainfall emanating from the waterfall spirals up to create colourful rainbows, fluffing up the pure charm of the entire beautiful surroundings.

Waterfall landscapes are the wonders of nature, bearing testimony to its diversity and beauty. Many waterfalls are set high amidst verdant forest regions, an emerald tapestry created by nature that stretches into the far-off horizon. Tall trees with branches draped with moss and epiphytes form an unbroken canopy, filtering sunlight and allowing it to glimmer as dappled shadows on the cold forest floor. Ferns, orchids, and wildflowers splash the undergrowth with colour. The waterfall's constant supply of water nurtures the vegetation, and this area becomes one of the most ecologically rich habitats on earth. Waterfalls also provide unique locations that favour creating highly diversified ecosystems. Many times, such areas are a haven for untold wildlife.

Birds such as kingfishers, herons, and eagles can be seen gliding above the waters; butterflies dance gracefully from flower to flower. The calls of songbirds unite with the rushing water to form a lovely symphony. In the forested area, small mammals like otters, squirrels, and monkeys are common, while larger animals such as deer, wild boar, and even elusive predators like leopards may be found in the more hidden and remote sections of the jungle. Our amphibians, frogs and salamanders, would survive in such moist enclaves, thus indicating the presence of a genuinely pristine backdrop.

Beyond sustaining rich fauna, waterfalls are pivotal to the environment. Feeding rivers and streams that flow downstream, they maintain the hydrological cycle that sustains agricultural lands and communities. The mist and humidity produced by the falls create a microclimate conducive to ferns, mosses, and lichens which are rare. Constant moisture favours fungi, supplementing the nutrient cycle of the ecosystem. The surrounding landscapes are a veritable paradise of sights and sounds that are truly unparalleled. The sight of water plunging from great heights, the soothing rhythmic sound of cascading streams, and the cool refreshing touch of mist on the face would provide a sensory delight. Walking through the roughest of terrains, crossing wooden bridges, and pushing through thick verdure to reach a waterfall would be a reward in itself. The uneven landscape, carved into existence by the roaring power of water, tells its tale of time and geological evolution, rendering waterfalls not just natural wonders but historical landscapes.

Some other dimensions of waterfalls' beauty come with the play of light and water at different hours. At sunrise and sunset, golden rays bounce off the cascading waters, creating a spectacle that is hard to resist. Under the moon and the stars, some waterfalls glow in an ethereal allure, matched in silence by the whispers of the nocturnals and the gentle rush of the water in obscurity. For photographers and nature lovers, waterfalls give endless inspiration. The gestural quality with rhythmic movements of flowing water, contrasting texture of rocks, and play of light and shadow produce exquisite masterpieces of sculpture in nature. Waterfalls gaze silkily with water in long exposure photography: they transform evanescent phenomena into a timeless piece. Also, artists and poets have taken metaphors from waterfalls for life, power, and renewal.  The waterfalls hold cult and spiritual significance in many countries.

The indigenous traditions of some put them among sacred sites, with deities or spirits said to inhabit them. Many ceremonies and rituals have been held adjacent to waterfalls, where the clarity of the water is a symbol of purification and renewal. Further legends surround some waterfalls; they weave folklore into the natural vista and add an extra layer of intrigue to their appeal. In conclusion, waterfalls have no match when it comes to aesthetic beauty and scenic attractions. From their towering heights and powerful cascades to the tranquillity of dreamy pools beneath, every aspect of a waterfall is a tribute to nature's artistry. The temperate landscapes that house these waterfalls, full of rich biodiversity and luxuriant vegetation, make such places not only aesthetically appealing but also growth lobbies for many living souls. Adventures, relaxation, or inspiration find a worthy cause at waterfalls, and long will their memory be a scar upon the minds of their beholders.

Weather & Best Time

When is the best time? This, of course, depends on various factors: taste, activity planned, and what the weather looks like at that very time. Each season has its own experience; hence, an understanding of variations in that domain would lay out a decision for a potential tourist. Broadly speaking, there are three seasons--summer, monsoon, and winter--which can each claim their attractions and challenges. Summer extends from March to June in a generalized description; with rising temperatures and dry weather gripping most parts of the country. For this reason, in the plains and coastal areas, the mercury might go up to more than 40°C (104°F), making it sometimes extremely uncomfortable to stay outdoors.

Those tourists seeking cooler climes flock to hill stations such as Manali, Darjeeling, and Ooty, where summer activities are provided. Travelers are likely to experience hot days and warm nights with little or no rain in summer. Light and breathable clothing, including sunglasses and sun hats, are essential, and good sunscreen to protect against heat stroke and sunburn. Even so, constant hydration is the key, for dehydration and heat exhaustion are common in regions of high temperature.

This is the time of heavy rainfall and humidity in the monsoon season from June to July not even once does the country fail to receive a good drench here. Well-renovated greenish looks along with all the grateful charm of waterfalls pouring extra mist over the top of the hills greet the country at this hour. Munnar, Cherrapunji, and Lonavala look like paradise in the monsoon. However, the season also poses a few demerits-waterlogging, landslides in hills, and heavy downpours disrupting journeys. Sometimes this humidity can come down upon the coastal side and feel like a ton-on-your-head burden; unglamorous waterproofs like clothes or full-length rubber coats, umbrellas, and other fast-drying materials should come to the rescue. As far as the footgear is concerned, more important are shoes that give a grip against wetlands; with that in mind, just taking some kind of insect repellent this time will be very necessary since stagnant water supports the breeding of these pesky creatures. Winter, I wish to add from October to February the period considered stress-free for travel in India. Most other parts see chill air going down, hovering around 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F), while some further north might witness sub-zero readings blanketed with snow. The cold weather is ideal for adventure sports skiing, trekking, or camping in places like Auli, Gulmarg, and Himachal Pradesh.

Predictably and understandably, Rajasthan, Goa, and Kerala witnessed a slowly but steadily increasing influx of tourists basically due to pleasant weather. Mornings in the north are always a bit frosty and cool; nights from this moment turn misty. Hence, layered clothing, thermals, gloves, and warm jackets in cold regions need to be carried, whereas light woollens should suffice in milder winters. A good moisturizer to protect against dry weather would do you well along with a layer of lip balm. Every month has a different climate. March to May-peak summer-are best for high-altitude destinations, possibly a bit uncomfortable for explorations down in the lowlands. June to August is the monsoon peak, adding an ensemble of greenery but requires planning to avoid disruptions. September to November, balancing between the end of monsoon to the onset of winter, exhibit greener vistas paired with a tang of chilly air. December to February is best for all activities associated with winter and sightseeing, thus being the most preferred season for the maximum crush of tourists. And whatever the season, a wise traveller should follow local weather updates, keep packing accordingly, and take every measure towards a comfortable journey. Knowledge of these seasonal variations would allow every traveller to enjoy their sojourn to the fullest while preparing for different weather scenarios.

Safety Tips and Precautions to be Followed While Trekking in the Monsoons

Monsoon trekking is beautifully picturesque with lush green landscapes, gushing waterfalls, and foggy peaks, which entice most trekkers to experience all this beauty. The same season, unfortunately, lays forth its numbing challenges on trails, unpredictable weather, and possibly even sightings of wildlife. Trekkers should prepare this way for any unforeseen circumstance and make it second nature to them.

Risks Associated with Monsoon Trekking.

Trekking in the monsoon season has many perils. One is the fearless ground created by continuous rainfall. The trails become muddy and treacherous at times, and the chances of slipping and falling increase. For hilly areas, where later heavy rains loosen rocks and soil, it becomes a danger, causing widespread rockfall. In addition to all these difficulties, the weather is also an abrupt change in the entire physical experience now pours torrentially, thunders with furious lashings, and winds that may whip extremely hard on trekking tours. Fog also makes visibility disappear completely at times; this is the real challenge in terms of orientation. Flash floods are also a very serious consideration concerning trekking in the area of riverbanks or waterfalls since these water surges can normally take lives if trekkers do not take the right measures for safety.  Leeches and insects. Slippery creatures love the wetness and can latch onto your skin and cause immense pain, even infection. This is bad enough, but when you add malaria and dengue spread by mosquitoes, you now know why trekkers have extra pains at this time.

Wildlife Activities and Their Management

Wildlife activity increases during monsoon making wildlife encounters more probable along the trekking paths. Most animals, however, instinctively avoid humans and react defensively when such an encounter happens by surprise.

  • Snakes: Snakes come out of their hiding during the monsoon as it floods their hiding places from outside. If you see a snake, stay still, keep your distance, and do not make sudden movements. Do not try to touch or antagonize the serpent. Sad to say, snakes usually don't enjoy human touch, nor are they particularly fond of human company; they try as much as possible to stay away from us. Staying on well-trodden footpaths limits your chances of stepping on one.

  • Leeches and Insects: Cover the maximum skin surface and apply some salt or insect repellent on the exposed regions. Check the body now and then, and in case of a leech, pull it off gently with salt or a firm dry grip. Mosquitoes and other biting insects can be kept at bay with the use of insect repellents.

  • Wild Animals: In certain forested trekking areas, huge wildlife like elephants, bears, and wild boars may be encountered. If seen close to large animals, give them distance, do not yell, and never run, and they will most likely chase you out. Mark the trail and walk in groups to reduce the risk of such encounters.

First Aid: Nothing matters while trekking during monsoon, if there is not sufficient preparation for medical emergencies. Every trekker should possess a first aid kit containing:

  • antiseptic wipes and creams;

  • bandages, gauze, and adhesive tape;

  • analgesics such as ibuprofen or paracetamol;

  • oral rehydration salts (ORS) to prevent dehydration;

  • creams to prevent leeches from biting and insects from biting;

  • anti-allergic medicine for insect bites;

  • bandages for the treatment of blisters; and

  • a small pair of scissors and tweezers.
