Tikona Fort, also known as Vitandgad, is a beautiful hill fort in the Maharashtra section of the Western Ghats. Tikona is renowned for its triangular structure, which gives it its name "Tikona," with "tikona" actually being "triangular" in Marathi. The fort stands at around 3,500 feet (1066 meters) above sea level and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain ranges surrounding it. Tikona Fort is of historical and strategic importance as it was an important watchtower of the Maratha Empire. With its elevation, it was a suitable point to observe movements of the enemy army along with being a defensive spot. The fort is today a trekking destination for adventure enthusiasts as well as historians due to the peaceful landscapes, old architecture, and a mystery that remains attached to its ancient walls.
Tikona Fort, situated in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, is a historic and enigmatic site. This triangular fort stands at 3,500 feet high and has been a significant site since times eternal. It has been the site of various wars, the abode of numerous rulers, and a significant Maratha fort. But aside from its recorded past, Tikona Fort is also full of myths and legends that were handed down through generations. These myths, borrowed from the surrounding folklores and cultural practices, place an aura of mystique around the fort and are still fascinating adventurers and history buffs alike.
One of the most popular legends around Tikona Fort is regarding its name, which is 'triangular' in Marathi. In mythology, the unique shape of the fort is not a coincidence but a divine plan. According to mythology, the heavens themselves created the fort by shaping the mountain into a triangle symbolizing stability, strength, and equilibrium. The triangle was shaped to be a symbol of protection for the people surrounding it against invasions and natural catastrophes. And yet another fascinating legend connected with Tikona Fort is that of treasure buried deep inside its fort walls. According to local tradition, there was a great Maratha warrior who, before going out to a decisive battle, left behind his vast riches in the safekeeping of the fort's security. He believed that a righteous and fair king alone would one day find the treasure and use it in the interest of the people. Several have tried it over time, but no one has managed to find it. There are others who opine that spiritual forces guard the treasure so that it will never be discovered until the right person arrives.
Even the fort itself is haunted by a spine-tingling legend which speaks of a wandering ghost in the shape of the 'Guardian of Tikona.' The legend is that there was a highly devoted warrior who met his death as a result of injury while keeping watch over the fort against an invading force. His devotion and dedication were so immense that even in death, his ghost refused to vacate his post. They claim his spirit still wanders the fort, protecting its remains and repelling intruders. Many trekkers and travelers also experienced strange occurrences, hearing sounds in the wind and feeling an unseen presence when trekking through the fort late at night. Some even claim to have spotted a dark shape standing atop the highest point of the fort, watching silently the landscape below.
Adding to the mystique of the fort is a myth of a tunnel that is said to connect Tikona Fort to other forts in the region, such as Lohagad and Visapur. It is said to have been constructed by ancient warriors as a secret route for evacuations in the event of sieges. Although no concrete evidence of any such tunnel was ever found, all the locals believe to this day that such passages still exist within the underground portion of the collapsed fort. Researchers and historians too search for clues till date, hoping for the unveiling of this century-old mystery. Religious folklore also assumes significance in the mythology of Tikona Fort. The fort contains a tiny but holy temple of Lord Trimbakeshwar (Lord Shiva in another form). A myth states that a sage did meditation inside the fort and was granted blessings by god. According to legend, his prayer infused divine power into the fort and sanctified it so that pilgrims would be able to receive blessings and protection there. Among those visiting say they have an indescribable feeling of serenity and spirituality as they get a whiff of the presence of the sage. A different fabled incident has some group of travelers get lost within the dense forest tracts around Tikona Fort.
Upon darkening of night, they remained marooned with no hope of heading back home. Hopeless, they called upon the protector spirit of the fort for salvation. To their amazement, an elderly man emerged, leading them on the dark pathways and bringing them to the village below safely. When they moved to thank them, he dissipated into nothingness. The people are certain that it was the spirit of a warrior or sage, who lived long ago, and he continues to assist people who show respect towards the fort and the history of the fort. Besides the myth of the ghost and the divine, Tikona Fort also has stories of courage and valor. One of them is the story of the Maratha soldiers who protected the fort when the The Marathas indeed seemed to have cunningly made those very traps, as most of them were spoken to be outnumbered badly.
Lighting several torches hanging from a distance did the magic, capturing the fierce might, while holding out in such situations. Such brilliance is valor for the locals, who see the fort quite as an emblem of Maratha wit and might. Mughal soldiers. The legacies have endowed the fort with fairytale charm, much beyond that of a mere medieval edifice. The myth may even seem a little silly to some, but the fact is all who step within these walls can indeed perceive the strangely mystical ambience each stone, ruin, or even breeze seems to tell a tale waiting to be unveiled. Even it has survived all such narrating till date capturing the ears of young ones- children of those villages and the old- in such a manner that legacy of this fort is passed through generations. For the historians or trekkers, these are enough to create excitement in the journey because, whether they talk of lost treasure or a wandering soul or a mysterious tunnel, the mere existence of them is exhilarating for the trek. Time will only add an interesting dimension to the drop of grace from the Almighty, making these legends preserve the heritage of Tikona fort at a juncture between history and mythology.

Being one of the ancient forts on the Sahyadri hills, Tikona Fort has been in existence since the Satavahana Dynasty (2nd century BCE-3rd century CE). This fort has also seen a large amount of bloodshed and competition for power among various dynasties like that of the Yadavas, Bahamanis, Mughals, and Marathas. During this period the most popular routes across the Western Ghats were around Tikona Fort. It had been in the control of the Yadava dynasty, which ruled this fort and saw the Deccan plateau. The fort then went into the hands of the Bahmani sultanate and then passed into those of the Nizam Shahi of Ahmednagar kings. Only in the 17th century did Tikona Fort become significant to the history of the Maratha Empire and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The shrewdest man in military strategy, Shivaji Maharaja saw, as anyone would, that Tikona Fort had strategic importance. In 1657, it was taken by Shivaji from the Adil Shahi dynasty for the growing Maratha Empire. It was in using Tikona Fort as much for Maratha operations in this area as well as against the Mughal army that Tikona Fort came into its significance during the battle. Tikona Fort was also a fort for training Maratha trainees, which had many steep hills and narrow pathways that were more suitable for training purposes with the fort watch towers. The architecture was designed in such a way that it offered natural protection to the fort with steep walls and narrow openings against an enemy. Tikona Fort got into the hands of the British during the Anglo-Maratha wars of the 18th century, along with all the other forts belonging to the Marathas. It seemed that after the downfall of the Maratha Empire, the British neglected the same and as such, the fort began to decay. Now, this fort stands as a symbol of bravery or strength in keeping alive the spirits of the Marathas and all those who would like to visit its ruins to connect the present with the past.
Triangular, whose very unusual outline makes it one of the distinguishing features within the Sahyadri ranges.
Bale Killa (Citadel): The very top of the fort which beautifully views Pawna Lake, Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort, and Visapur Fort.
Trishul and Temple: Trishul (trident) is located where we can worship the shrine of Lord Shiva.
Water Tanks and Caves: A number of rock to heavily cut water underground tanks or reservoirs and Buddhist caves tell much piercingly about the long history of the fort.
Secret Entrances: Many secret fortifications inside the fort, which are guarded against enemies, have existed for a long, long time.
Origin and Building Construction
The fort is called Tikona Fort or Vitandgad because the head is held by this hill fort in the Maval region in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is a triangular-shaped fort, as its very name implies, Tikona, standing for triangle in Marathi. Located about 3,500 ft above sea level, the fort overlooks a very beautiful scenic view of lands below. It was naturally built keeping an eye over trade routes protecting these routes and its immediate area from any usages outside. Its time of construction is not known, but according to historical proof, it is said to have existed in the time of Satavahana dynasty (c. 2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE) since they were the rulers of the Deccan plateau. But the fort is raised taking full use of the natural topography so as to leave no chances to the enemy for a successful conquest. High walls, bastions, almost non-existing side gates-marked it as almost an impregnable fort. Inside the fort stone-cut staircases lead down to water reservoirs and caves as well as temples built so it could sustain.
Tikona Fort was a strategic point in the 17th century when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the originator of the Maratha Empire, bought different forts in the Sahyadri range of mountains to build his empire strong. Tikona and other close forts such as Lohagad, Visapur, and Tung as a set played a defense measure that became a core of the war plan of the Marathas. Its most notable occurrence was its capture in 1657 by Bijapur Adil Shahi forces of Shivaji Maharaj. The fall of Tikona strengthened the Maratha fort of Maval and prepared the way for the likely opening for further expanding space. Tikona was a garrison, school, and depot of Maratha soldiers. Strategically located, Tikona was also a communication and supply line of great importance between such powerful forts as Sinhagad and Rajmachi. Tikona had experienced several battles under Shivaji Maharaj as the Mughals had attempted to take over the region. The most renowned among these battles was the battle of the Mughal invasions when Aurangzeb had attempted to suppress the growing dominance of the Marathas. But due to the natural strength of the fort and the gallantry of the Maratha soldiers, the Mughals were unable to keep Tikona in their possession for a long duration of time.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj remains the most notable historical figure linked to Tikona Fort. His military acumen and strategic foresight led to the fort’s inclusion in the Maratha Empire. Shivaji’s trusted commanders, including Tanaji Malusare and Netaji Palkar, played vital roles in maintaining control over Tikona and using it as a stronghold against enemy forces. Among the other significant personalities with whom Tikona was associated was the great Maratha admiral, Kanhoji Angre. Though he is renowned for having controlled the Konkan coast, Angre and his armies used Tikona and other forts as forward positions of operation from the coast for action. To the next generation of the Maratha Empire, Tikona Fort was under temporary rule by the Peshwas, the highest ranking ministers of the Maratha dynasty.
The Peshwas governed Tikona as an administrative office and fort until the British started extending their control in India's west. The Maratha Empire lost power in the first half of the 19th century, eventually resulting in the eventual British conquest of Tikona Fort. Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817-1818) resulted in consecutive British conquests of all Maratha forts, including Tikona Fort. Unlike the other strategically well-placed forts, Tikona did not have any major battles during the British era since the Marathas had already lost a significant part of their might by then. When it came under British rule, though, the value of Tikona Fort as a strategic location dwindled. The British destroyed part of the fortifications to dissuade any revival of Maratha resistance. Tikona was left to crumble over the years, and nature took over much of what was left. Its historical status did not leave, however, and it continued to fascinate historians and visitors alike.
Fort has stood for centuries as a symbol of power, strategy, and architectural prowess. Crafted and constructed with utmost care and engineering skill, the forts were impregnable strongholds that protected the kingdoms from invaders and acted as administrative centers. The subject fort is a good representation and exhibits a combination of defense architecture, religious significance, and engineering excellence. We are discussing its fortification, entrance gate, bastions, walls, water cisterns, rock-cut caves, the Trimbakeshwar Mahadev temple constructed in the reverence of God and the secret passages which so lavishly showered it with history. Fortification and Entrance Gate Fort walls were built to withstand sieges and attacks by invading armies. The gate was an engineering wonder, usually built in zigzag fashion to deflect direct attack. Gates were usually iron-spiked to discourage war elephants used by attacking forces. Gates positioned the attacker strategically to advance through narrow conduits where they were vulnerable to easy attack by defenders. Lovely wooden gates iron-plated provided additional protection. Guard houses and towers guarded the gateway to remain vigilant at all times for any intrusions. Periodic chiseling above the gate of a symbol or inscription of the ruling dynasty was a sign of their suzerainty and authority.
The fort was surrounded by huge bastions and walls. Their construction had tried to render it durable as far as huge blocks of stones and lime mortar were concerned. The wall was extremely high, and therefore relatively thick, nearly in-impregnable. Huge bastions left gaps, from which there were look-out positions and artillery platforms. There were some fortifications where earlier there were hidden store rooms where the guns and ammunition would be stored. The walls were double or triple reinforced with stones and sloping so that the incoming fire could be chucked away. Gun ports and loopholes were also incorporated into the walls through which the gunners would fire at the attacking army without putting themselves outside.
The second most critical aspect of the sustainability of any fort was water. The fort had properly planned water cisterns that offered a perennial supply of water even during prolonged sieges. The cisterns, which were cut into the rock, collected and stored rainwater. Some of the cisterns were linked with underground pipes, offering running water to different parts of the fort. The presence of the rock-cut caves inside the fort also indicates the creativity of individuals who built the fort. The caves were used for purposes that varied from store rooms, meditating rooms, and shelters. The caves were also shrouded in intricately carved pillars and inscriptions, which confirm that the caves were also used for religious rituals. The caves were naturally insulated by cooling them in summer and warming them in winter.
The sanctum sanctorum of the sites in the fort is the temple of Lord Shiva called Trimbakeshwar Mahadev. The architecture here depicts the traditional way and the sanctum with the Shivalinga within and ornate carvings, stone pillars in all directions. The temple was previously visited by soldiers as well as the pilgrims before departing to participate in wars. Hindu mythological scene sculptures have been used for temple square. Although this fort is militarily strategic, the existence of a temple here proves that religion and worship meant a great deal to subjects and ruling dynasties alike. Its religious rituals and ceremonies still prevail even today in an attempt to maintain its culture.
Most fascinating of all is the intricate system of hidden tunnels and emergency exit shafts. The hidden tunnels were built in advance to protect the ruling class and top-brass military commanders from siege. The hidden tunnels were covertly concealed behind walls, within walls, or beneath staircases. The others escaped into nearby forests, rivers, or second line forts and were in a position to regroup there and attack. These tunnel exits were built so well that they even featured air vents as well as torch supports, so it was safe even in total darkness to travel through them.
Trekking Difficulty Level and Best Season
Tikona Fort, or Vitandgad, is a trekker's heaven in Maharashtra's Sahyadri mountain range. It is located at around 3,500 feet mean sea level and is a moderately difficult trek that can also be attempted by beginners. The trek is a gentle slope with very steep stairs towards the end, so it is a tough trek but not at all brutal. Winter and monsoon are the ideal time to trek up to Tikona Fort. Monsoon transforms the landscape between June and September into a green paradise of waterfalls and concealed landscape despite the path getting slippery. Post-monsoon and winter weather between October to February has good weather, though it makes the trek simpler to some degree without spoiling the scenery. Summer is a bit challenging with hot weather and dry trails, and therefore the trek is less enjoyable. Route Details and Landmarks The climb to Tikona Fort begins from Tikona Peth village, the base point. The village is extremely accessible from Lonavala and Pune and hence a great weekend holiday spot. From Tikona Peth, the path is clearly marked and around 1.5 to 2 hours to the top, depending on speed and weather.
The trekking began with a gradual rise on village roads and open ground. As the trekker proceeds, he/she reaches a dense clump of wood, a shaded cool oasis before it opens up to a rocky terrain. One of the most unusual markers on the trail is a cave dug out in the rock face, a resting spot. A little further down, a pleasant stone gate, or the main gate, is the beginning of the final climb to the summit. The last climb is a flight of rock-cut stairs of some incline to the crest of the fort. The trek can go up and witness the ruins of the fort in the form of ancient tanks, bastions, and a Shiva temple. Its beginning dates back to the Maratha times when the fort used to be an army watchtower because it was strategically located overlooking the Pawna valley.
Tikona Fort trek is a treat for nature lovers with varied flora and fauna. Wild flowers, ferns, and moss rocks line the trek in monsoon. Forest glades on the trek have various native tree species like teak, banyan, and fig trees. The meadows become golden in post-monsoon months, providing another new look to the landscape. Trekking through such woods is great to see a wide variety of species like parakeets, peacocks, and kingfishers for the enjoyment of bird watchers. Wild hare, squirrel, and mongoose do not occur within this wood anywhere. Variety of butterflies is seen in great numbers with flowers as the shade created provides a life sketch of the entire trekking zone. If treks are taken in the morning or evening hours, individuals have even heard calls such as owls hooting and observed fireflies dancing in dark niches.
One of the advantages of trekking to Tikona Fort is enjoying the great sight of sunrise and sunset from the summit. Since the fort is strategically located, it presents a wide view of the surrounding hills, for instance, Tung Fort, Lohagad Fort, and Visapur Fort. For those who love sunrises, an early morning wake-up and reaching the top at the onset of sunrise is a treat. When the sun's dawn break peeps above the hills for the first time, the horizon is kissed with pink, orange, and gold. Sunset fog on the horizon in the background of Pawna Lake creates an otherworldly, fairy-like ambiance, all the efforts of the trek being worthwhile. Sunset at Tikona Fort is scenic as well. When the sun setting dips below the hills, it tints the earth with gold, and Pawna Lake mirrors the color of the evening sky. With day giving way to dusk, the sky above is a vista of violet and red color when the daylight recedes and welcomes the descendents who choose to descend after sunset with a vista to behold. Whether adventure, history, or nature is on the lookout, the Tikona Fort trek offers a good combination of the three.
