Vikatgad Peb Fort, also known as Peb Fort, is a fascinating hill fort in nearby Neral in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. Peb Fort is situated in the Sahyadri hills and is approximately 2,100 feet above sea level. Peb Fort is a trekker's delight all year round because of its looks, comparatively challenging trail, and historical significance. The fort is dedicated to the local goddess Pebi Devi and also to Swami Samarth, a saint of Marathwada. Vikatgad Peb Fort was visited by adventure enthusiasts, history enthusiasts, and nature enthusiasts in the past who were willing to traverse its ruins, caves, and landscapes of the area. 3-4 km away from Neral railway station, the fort is conveniently reachable from Mumbai and Pune, and thus it is a perfect weekend trip for trekkers. Vikatgad Peb Fort trek is an adrenaline rush with dense green forest cover, steep slopes, rock-solid trails, and a bird's eye view of the surrounding peaks such as Matheran, Chanderi, and Malanggad. The monsoon, however, transforms the area into a green haven, with waterfalls tumbling down the hills and mist hovering above the valley, giving the trek an ethereal taste. While moderately challenging, parts of the trail must be negotiated cautiously, especially on rainy days when rocks are slippery. The path is followed by ladders, metal railings, and rock-cut steps that contribute to the experience more excitingly.
Historically, Vikatgad Peb Fort is as old as the Marathas and Mughals. The fort has been suspected to have been used as a watchtower and inter-fort communication point such as Matheran and Rajmachi forts. Because of its strategic position, it was part of the chain of defence forts of the Marathas as a watch post and defence outpost to monitor the movements of foes. It was not a military camp similar to big forts such as Raigad or Rajgad but an efficient cog in the local system of surveillance. Remains of the destroyed structures, tanks, and caves confirm that the fort possessed facilities to quarter soldiers as well as store materials during the period of existence. There is a small Swami Samarth temple inside the fort that presents evidence of religious-military significance. The fort provides sightseers as well as students of history the chance to step back in time and witness the architectural wonders of yesteryear. The ascent begins from Neral and follows many different routes, all of them being the favourite route through a forested tract part of the path, ridges of boulders, and plains. The route to the top is along the trail. The boardwalk provides a picturesque view of the train line twisting its path on the side of the hill, enhancing the glory of the ascent. At the summit, the tourists are greeted with a breathtaking view of the ridges, valleys, and far-off forts of Matheran which were a part of Maharashtra's history.
The trek to the fort is not merely about adventure but also about seeing the history and nature of the Sahyadris. With time, Vikatgad Peb Fort has become very popular among weekend trekkers and tours and hence one of the trekking sites to visit in Maharashtra. The right combination of adventure, history, and spirituality makes it a site to be visited, which can be a source of attraction for young and old alike. Whether it is a monsoon hike, a heritage walk, or a pilgrimage tour, the fort is an experience unto itself that leaves one feeling a sense of fulfilment and wonder. The scenic setting, ancient past, and blood-pumping trekking routes make Vikatgad Peb Fort a place not to miss in the heart of the Western Ghats.
Vikatgad Peb Fort is an extremely ancient hill fort with a rich heritage with historical significance, strategic position, and cultural past situated near Neral in the state of Maharashtra. One of the top trekking destinations today located on a plateau around 2,100 feet mean sea level above is a place with a peaceful view and highly strong pull of the past. Its history is centuries old, and it has been part of various times in history, such as the Maratha and British colonial times.
The history of Vikatgad Peb Fort goes back to the early medieval era, although there are no definite records of its establishment. The fort was so named after the Hindu god Lord Ganesha, also known as 'Vikat,' and 'Peb,' from the river and stone that flows along. Like most of the hill forts in Maharashtra, Vikatgad was constructed predominantly as a defence and sentinel fortress, capitalizing on its natural elevated ground to search for hostile movement along the surrounding valleys. The fort acted as a strategic watchtower and outpost for several local conflicts and as a buffer to the larger forts of Rajmachi, Prabalgad, and Irshalgad. As it was situated on trade and military routes, it fell into the hands of different powers who governed alternately, such as local chieftains, Marathas, and lastly the British. The terrain of the hilly Sahyadri range was naturally defensive and hence an apt place for defence and communication purposes from the military perspective. Identification with Shivaji Maharaj and MarathasWhile Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was consolidating the Maratha Empire in the 17th century, Vikatgad Peb Fort was part of a series of hill forts added to the Maratha Empire.
Less prominent than more renowned forts like Raigad or Sinhagad, Peb Fort served Shivaji's long chain of forts with the goal of guerrilla warfare tactics against the Mughal and Adilshahi armies. Marathas employed Peb Fort mainly for reconnaissance and as a depot to furnish supplies. That the fort was located close to other strategic forts rendered Peb Fort a significant nexus in the web of strategically situated forts developed by Shivaji across Maharashtra. Rockiness and high vegetation of forests around Peb Fort gave Maratha troops a tactical edge to attack unsuspecting invading forces moving through the area. Even after the reign of Shivaji, Peb Fort remained under the influence of the Maratha Empire. The Peshwas, who came to rule the empire after Shivaji, held the strategic significance of the fort and employed it in their warfare against the Nizams and the British.
Peb Fort naturally goes hand-in-hand with Matheran, one of the most popular hill stations of Maharashtra. Peb Fort lies on the trekking track between Neral and Matheran and is a trek and travel point of interest. It once used to be habited by villagers around Peb Fort, and it was a shorter route for the merchants and troops going from one fort to the other. Once the British developed Matheran in the 19th century as a hill station, activity around Peb Fort increased. The British developed railway lines and paths for Matheran to connect it with other places nearby, thereby indirectly promoting Peb Fort. Tourists who come to trek in Matheran these days enjoy trekking to Peb Fort as part of their visit, experiencing its historical beauty and beautiful natural environment.
At the time of British colonial occupation in India, most of the forts of Maharashtra had lost their strategic importance and were abandoned or put to other uses. To prevent the control of forts earlier, as nuclei of rebellion and revolt, the British destroyed them or let them become dilapidated. Others, however, like Peb Fort, continued to be involved in local administration and transport. Peb Fort, which was located close to Matheran, became used as a guidepost by British officers and travellers going towards the hill station. Although the British never used the fort in their military campaigns, they made sure that the route towards Matheran remained always accessible. Portions of the fort such as its rock-cut trails and steps remained intact so they could be accessed without much hassle. Historical records declare the ways through which revolutionists and freedom fighters travelled secret routes bypassing Peb Fort to escape British soldiers during the periods of India's struggle for independence. The island placement of the fort and the tough terrain offered havens for revolutionists in fighting against British dominion. Even after centuries of natural erosion and abandonment, Vikatgad Peb Fort is still holding on to a little bit of the past.
The visitors can observe rock-cut cisterns, traces of fort walls, and cave-like structures which were initially a store room and a shelter. The most eye-catching of the fort's offerings is the Swami Samarth temple, dedicated to a saint from Maharashtra. The temple draws not only pilgrims but also adventure seekers trekking to the site and thus imparts a religious tinge to the fort's significance. Other inscriptions and sculptures on the fort structures also provide clues regarding its past connections with ruling dynasties through the ages. Peb Fort also contains a peculiar set of caves, some of which must have served as dwelling places for ascetics and hermits in ancient days. The miniature caves reflect the pre-military occupation history of the fort. Some historians presume that the caves were Buddhist as they bear the same shape similarity as other Maharashtra rock-cut monuments. Peb Fort today is a well-known trekking site that is swarmed by history buffs and adventure lovers in equal proportion. That the fort can be reached with ease from Neral and is linked with Matheran only serves to heighten its appeal for everyone keen on discovering Maharashtra's heritage.
Vikatgad Peb Fort is a mute witness to Maharashtra's stormy but glorious past. Beginning as a watchtower, later evolving to be identified with Shivaji Maharaj and the Marathas, and then on to becoming a monument close to the British-founded Matheran, the fort has spanned different distinct phases of its existence. Although presently not used militarily, the fort still fascinates tourists in equal proportion because of its skyline vistas, heritage artefacts, and religious pull. The fort is not only a reminder of the past but also Maratha's courage and strategic vision. Its rocky trails, ancient cisterns, and cave abodes are testimonials to the warriors, monks, and pilgrims who had found refuge within its walls in times past. Explorers of today who walk up its slopes and drink in the glorious landscape of the Sahyadris tread along paths that have walked history, keeping Vikatgad Peb Fort's legacy intact for posterity.
Geography and Location
Located at an altitude of 2,050 feet above sea level, the terrain of the area features a combination of natural topography, varied landscapes, and varied climatic conditions that change with the season. The landscape at this altitude is typically hilly, slope, or plateaus sloping towards a panoramic landscape. The country may be thickly overgrown with vegetation, heavy forest, or wide grassland that extends for miles. Apart from the natural landscape, there are streams, rivers, and tiny lakes that help form the natural landscape and serve as life-sustaining waters that nourish fauna and flora. The geography of the location is diverse with some rocky outcrops, some arable land, and even sandy or loamy sections, which affect the vegetation that prevails there. Being at 2,050 feet altitude, it is a moderate altitude, and therefore the climate is relatively mild compared to the lowlands but not so cold compared to high-altitude regions. Climatic variations with seasons at this altitude form a dynamic, changing world because of which it is a tourist spot, nature enthusiasts' heaven, and trekkers' destination. Summer from March to June is as warm as 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F), but not hot. Heat during summer is normally cooled by mild breezes, particularly where there is dense vegetation or bodies of water. While heatwaves are possible in some locations, higher altitude provides cool evenings with a pronounced temperature dip, making it comfortable to sleep. The spread of the trees and natural shade creates a healthy microclimate that enables open-air activities without any trouble even during the hottest summer season. The instant the summer shifts to the monsoon period, typically between June and September, the landscape completely changes.
Monsoon rains bring down heavy showers, enriching the landscape and turning it into a green heaven. Rainfall is harsh based on geography in this area, with areas experiencing drizzles and other showers of rain. Monsoon is defined by misty mornings every day, cloudiness, and a fresh earthy smell permeating the air. The rains make the soil fertile, flowers bloom, waterfalls cascade down, and rivers run with increased intensity. Rainy weather also comes with higher humidity and the occasional annoyance in the form of muddy trails, landslides on mountain slopes, and lower visibility due to recurring fog. All these notwithstanding, the monsoon beautifies the landscape in the region, and it is lovely for nature lovers and photographers who enjoy the hues and profusion of nature. Upon receding of the monsoon, autumn arrives in the region, which is a short pleasant phase that mostly persists until October and November months. These months are the times when the rains cease, depositing clear blue sky and invigorated landscapes.
The temperatures start lowering a little from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), presenting the best of weather for an excursion. The landscape still has some greenery for a while before gradually changing to autumn colours. Trees in sections start losing their leaves, and the area has a golden look. The air is cool and clean, and the view is great with great panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Wildlife activity is optimal as the animals start making preparations for the upcoming winter seasons, and the time is most favourable to watch birds and learn about them in their natural environments. Winter from December to February witnessed an actual temperature drop, albeit very mild compared to the higher regions. Daytime temperatures of 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), and nights get extremely cold, sometimes even at 5°C (41°F) or even lower in the low-lying parts.
Frost occurs but is a rare phenomenon found in remote valleys or damp areas. Cold, fresh weather of the season provides arguably the ideal time to trek, tour, or for any other outdoor activity. The landscape is less vibrant, with certain plants going dormant, but evergreens still inject some colour. Skies remain clear with unobstructed views of distant hills and countryside. Winters have their mornings veiled in a tender mist, which slowly recedes with the coming of the sun to create an enigmatic world that is calm but provocative. Spring, from February to early April, is the time of renewal for nature. With temperatures rising upwards starting slowly, winter dormant vegetation is triggered to bloom, tiling the hillside with flowers and glossy new green. Trees' flowers perfume the atmosphere, and birds that migrate tint the scenery. The weather is fine with temperatures between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F) during the day, and this is also a great time to visit and participate in outdoor activities. Spring is the season of transition from summer heat to winter cold with the best balance of good weather and nice views. Overall, the geography and climate at 2,050 feet is extremely balanced with natural diversity and seasonal change. The moderate height has a pleasant climate for twelve months with clear seasonal differences adding to the landscape beauty of the location. With hot summers and cool monsoons on the one side and cold autumns, cold winters, and colourful springs on the other, every season is filled with beauty and scope for adventure. Season independent, with monsoon greens, the fall visual splendour, the chill of winter, or spring's flowered grace, there is this hill that provides one with an ever-changing but always stunning backdrop to coax out the thrillers, the nature enthusiasts, and the traveller in search of oneness with nature.

Introduction
Vikatgad, or Peb Fort, is a hidden gem in Maharashtra's Sahyadri hills. Situated close to Matheran, it is a paradise for adventure seekers, a heaven for nature lovers, and a history lover's place. The fort was given the name of the Hindu god Lord Ganesha or Vikat and is a religious sacred place in the area. The trek combines perfectly the elements of history, spirituality, adventure, and distinct natural landscapes, hence making it an ideal trek for trekkers. Whether it is to discover rock-cut ancient temples, witness stunning sunrise and sunset points, or soak in thick monsoon forests, Vikatgad has everything.
The trekking to Vikatgad is quite demanding and is thus suitable for both novice and veteran trekkers. The trek could be either commenced from Neral or Matheran, the most popular route beginning at Neral Railway Station. The trek is carried out through forest cover, boulder patches, and picturesque plateaus, ending up finally on the top of the fort. Another utilized track as an option is from Matheran, providing a comparatively shorter but no lesser gratifying trek. Monsoon rains create torrential downpours, making the trails slippery, and infusing some degree of additional difficulty and adventure into the trek. Rock runs and slants must be traversed with care. Rain gear, trekking boots, and adequate hydration are advisable to ensure a safe and pleasant trek.
Caves and Rock-Cut Structures
The most captivating feature of Vikatgad would be the prehistoric rock-cut caves and structures. These caves were used by Buddhist monks centuries ago as a resting point and meditation location. Some portions of the caves are used by trekkers as resting shelters, which provide a peaceful and shaded refuge among hill country. The fort is shrouded with ancient walls, steps, and tanks, which indicate that it's historically significant. The fort does not have large architectural remains which other forts in Maharashtra possess, but the rock-cut architecture and cave houses indicate the wisdom of the ancient residents. Treks to the caves are a trip back in time and an enigma which makes the trek exciting.
The Vikatgad Temple (Lord Ganesha Temple)
The Lord Ganesha temple at Vikatgad stands at the very peak of the fort. It is small in size but serves as a worship area, to which trekkers, as well as devotees, are open since it can be reached and blessings along with praying done here by devotees. The temple is considered to be a religious one, and as it is located on top of the fort, one gets a sense of peace and spirituality. The italic font does not apply in this case. Across scenic landscapes, the temple is a tranquil resting place for trekkers. The temple across the gargantuan enormity of the colossal Sahyadri ranges makes trekking enjoyable and pleasing to watch while approaching the pinnacle.
Sunset and Sunrise Viewpoints
Vikatgad is famous for its stunning sunrise and sunset points with panoramic views of the surrounding hills, valleys, and forts. The sunrise in the backdrop is the most coveted by the trekkers to begin their trek early in the morning. Sunrise at Vikatgad is pure magic to watch out for, where golden colours tint the sky and glow in misty mountains. As lovely as the sunset inside the fort. When the sun dips behind the horizon, the sky turns into an orange, pink, and purple canvas. It is so lovely to behold that the walk is well worth it, with barely enough time to take a decent photograph and sit in serene contemplation. Lush Green Landscapes During Monsoon The best time to see Vikatgad is during monsoon when the forest comes alive amidst grass, waterfalls, and misty peaks. Monsoon jungle is converted to greenland paradise by rain and trekking is an eye treat. Bird chirping songs, the sound of water streams splashing, and a soft breeze make the atmosphere magical, and each step of the trekking is enjoyable. But trekking during the rainy season has its disadvantages too. The path is slippery, the visibility is low with the fog, and the heavy rains make the trek challenging. One has to wear a good raincoat and walk carefully to stay safe while doing this trek.
Panoramic Views of Matheran and Nearby Forts
The second big attraction of the Vikatgad trek is the scenery from the top. The individual at the top has a panoramic view of Matheran, a hill station famous for its colonial appearance and greenery all over. Even on clear days, a few of the surrounding forts can be viewed, i.e., Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Rajmachi, and Karnala Fort. All of these forts are historical and trekking is important in themselves, and the Vikatgad viewpoint is a good spot to witness the grandeur of the Sahyadri mountain ranges. To witness the forts rising above the valleys and clouds, an experience in itself, Vikatgad has turned into a popular trekking spot too.
Vikatgad is full of flora and fauna, and hence the trek gets even more scenic. The trek is made of dense forest cover which falls in the category of Matheran Eco-Sensitive Zone with exclusive biodiversity. It has bird species like peacocks, bulbuls, and drongos frequented by mountaineers and is a paradise for bird watching. There is also an ill-balanced composition of multicoloured wildflowers, big trees, and herbaceous plants around the zone contributing to the atmosphere of the walk. In monsoon, flowering crops line the path along the course of the walk and make for an incredible view for the photographer.
The ideal time to trek to Vikatgad is the monsoon (June-September) and winter (November-February) months. Treks during monsoon are ideal for those who like green landscapes and foggy surroundings, and winter treks are clear skies and pleasant weather. Summer is hot and arid and the trek is tiresome, but early morning or evening treks can be pleasant.
Key Tips for Trekkers
Dress Up: Wear trekking shoes with a good grip, especially during monsoon.
Carry Enough Water: There are hardly any water points along the trek and therefore sufficient drinking water should be carried.
Go Light: A light backpack with fewer pieces of garbage like snacks, raincoats, and a first-aid kit is best.
Early Start: It is better to start early in the morning for the trek so that the trek is easy and there is sufficient time to see the fort and enjoy the scenery.
Respect Nature: Do not litter and respect nature so that the beauty of Vikatgad is not marred.
Safety First: Be cautious on slippery slopes and sloping ground and do not attempt the hike alone so that safety is maintained.
Nature never lost its ability to awe and inspire us. The above is particularly so for forests, national parks, and wildlife reserves where richness of diversity can be sensed. Vegetative diversity gives unbelievable diversity in the life of animals too, so each visit is a new and exciting experience. From the tall trees to flowers and lovely blossoms, or even the strange beauty of animals and birds, something new is always waiting to be discovered.

They are the natural abode and food of certain wild animals and play a very significant role in the ecosystem.
Sal Trees (Shorea robusta): Grown in subtropical and tropical rainforests, the giant trees have denser wood along with medicinal quality. The thick leaf canopy of their trees serves as a shelter for many birds and insects.
Teak (Tectona grandis): Having the property of wood timbre quality, the teak trees also serve as a shelter to many birds, monkeys, and reptiles on twigs.
Bamboo (Bambusoideae): Forests of bamboo are very diverse. Bamboo forests are home and source of food for various wildlife such as elephants, deer, and red pandas.
Ferns and Orchids: These flowers provide a stunning look to the landscape. Orchids are in great demand due to their stunning colours and various shapes.
Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Certain medicinal plants, neem, tulsi, and ashwagandha, are naturally occurring. The plants have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. All the plants help the ecosystem to stay in balance so that various species of wildlife can coexist.
The vegetation is accompanied by just as varied a fauna. Visiting tourists within the forest and the nature parks have the opportunity to view different kinds of fauna within their native environments. Common types of wildlife most observed are:
Monkeys
Monkeys would probably be the most common wild animals found around. There are many species like the Rhesus Macaque, Langurs, and Bonnet Macaques that occupy the woods everywhere in India. Monkeys are said to be clever and wise animals, and they are mostly observed jumping from tree to tree searching for food, or just resting by grooming each other.
Birds
Birdwatching is part of wildlife tours to their properties. A beautiful bird when perched on a branch or in flight, is always a pleasure to watch. Among the birds easily seen are:
peacocks: With beautiful feathers and clumsy noises, the peacock is a beautiful treat in any wildlife reserve.
kingfishers: Their dainty-coloured feathers and irate searching attack make kingfishers readily accessible along rivers and lakes.
Hornbills: Large birds with bright colouration that are a rare but welcome visitor in forest regions.
Eagles and Hawks: Hawks and eagles are bird hunters that soar high above in the air, scanning for their prey.
Woodpeckers: The constant hammering on the tree trunks is the sound that is incessant in the forest.
Reptiles
Forests harbour a beautiful ensemble of reptiles, such as lizards, snakes, and turtles. The most frequent reptiles to view are:
Monitor Lizards: Sun-basking or on a branch, this animal is commonly spotted.
Cobras and Pythons: Otherwise shy, these snakes are an essential component of the food chain.
Jambi Keepers, Chameleons: Chameleon-like in colour, are a good subject for wildlife photography. The excitement of sighting wildlife cannot be described. If leaves are shaking with the sight of a monkey or the quick flash of a lizard on a rock, every experience in nature is unique.
Bird watching is the most satisfying sport for nature enthusiasts. Bird watching in the wild habitat gives us information about their social life, mode of food acquisition, and mannerisms. Bird-watching routes, bird-viewing decks, and nature guide tours are organized in all of the wildlife reserves and forests.
Best Time for Birdwatching
Birdwatching is preferably conducted during the morning and evening when birds are more active. The sun and soft light at such times also provide the best view and photography.
Equipment Needed for Birdwatching
To get optimum experience in a birdwatching tour, one requires the following equipment:
Binoculars: Good binoculars enable birdwatchers to see close observations of the birds from a distance.
Field Guide: A bird field guide makes identification of many species easy.
Camera: A zoom-lens camera takes memorable photographs.
Notebook and Pen: Taking notes on the birds observed helps in learning more effectively.
Favourite Bird Species for Birders
For those who are travelling to reserves and forests, some favourite bird species that are easily spotted and enjoyed by birders are:
Great Indian Hornbill: Its huge casque on their beak is this rare and majestic bird.
Indian Paradise Flycatcher: Its long and regal flight as well as the tufted tail make the flycatcher's appearance a bird watcher's treat.
Sunbirds: These small multi-coloured birds are normally seen as they jump from flower to flower for nectar.
Barbets: Its vivid colour and loud call make Barbets easy to identify.
Drongos: They are clever and good imitators, and they are fun to observe.
Since deforestation and land degradation are increasing, most of the birds are on the verge of extinction. Afforestation, bird parks, and campaigns are the hour of the day to save these birds of paradise. Bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts are the force that calls for conservation since they support ecotourism and wildlife conservation efforts.

Winter is best suited for snowscapes and big, cold-skied lovers since the Himalayas in winter are a snowflake heaven where international trekkers burn to them. The most favourable time of the year to go for a trek would be according to your preference and physical condition. If you prefer a colourful landscape and no grumble for rain, then trekking in the monsoon would be ideal for you. Winter would be ideal if you like snow and cold, and summer would be ideal if you like high-altitude treks. Neral and Matheran, Maharashtra's picturesque Western Ghats, are a gastronomic and cultural heritage treasure house. Gateway to one of India's most beautiful hill stations, the towns are a mix of Maharashtrian culture, tribal life, and native cuisine. A culture vulture, a food enthusiast, or even an adventurer in search of an authentic experience, Neral and Matheran offer a taste of native living.
There are some villages around Neral and Matheran, which give you a real picture of rural Maharashtra. The prominent villages among them are Jummapatti, Aman Lodge, and Dasturi Naka, where you have a chance to see the locals of this region in their daily work schedule. Locals of this region are predominantly Marathi-speaking individuals, and they have a rich culture based on folk culture, agriculture, and traditional arts. The Katkari and Thakar are the ruling inhabitants of the land residing in the Western Ghats for centuries. The tribal population living here are renowned for their multicoloured folk dance, unique dressing, and rich Warli painting, an ancient traditional painting of rural life, nature, and mythological stories. Their paintings may be viewed and even bought as souvenirs. Agriculturists are primarily the villagers who work to grow rice, millet, and other vegetables seasonally. The immediate proximity of the hill station to the forests also involves the picking of medicinal plants and honey to sell in the nearby markets most of the time. The hospitality of the people makes it an unimaginably rewarding trip to visit their villages.
Neral, which is the beginning of Matheran, has some small dhabas and restaurants that offer rich Maharashtrian cuisine. There are a lot of roadside eateries on the way to Matheran where one can drive by and enjoy freshly made snacks like bhajiyas (fritters), misal pav, and vada pav. Local veggies and fruit are used here while cooking food, so one is always sure to relish the real flavour of Maharashtra. Matheran, on the other hand, is as environmentally green in food culture as it is famous. Whereas automobiles do not find space within the hill station, meals are cooked at home kitchens with very few processed food items. Both hotels and homestays offer much local and multi-cuisine, but here lies the gold in relishing Maharashtrian thalis that are classical in taste and whispering local flavour. There is plenty of vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine available in Matheran. Vegetarians can relish some of the following: pithla bhakri (spicy gram flour bread), bharli vangi (stuffed brinjal curry), and zunka (dry chickpea flour, spicy). Non-vegetarians can relish Malvani-style fish curries and chicken sukka (dry coconut chicken). A glass of sol kadhi, a kokum beverage, is served traditionally after meals to aid digestion. For the confectionery tourist, Matheran's confectioneries offer the tourist a selection of local sweets like puran poli (sweet bread filled with filling), modaks (sweet coconut and jaggery-filled dumplings), and shrikhand (a sweet made from yoghurt with a creamy texture). Chikki, jaggery and nut brittle, are ones to be taken as a return gift from Matheran.
