Sakleshpur has a history since ancient periods because it was a part of the tract of Malnad region in Western Ghats that is more famous for dense green forests and wildlife and agricultural land. It was a place along the banks of the Hemavati River and was once a part of the larger empire of Cholas and the Hoysalas once. This great empire had dominated southern India for hundreds of years; unfortunately, very little history from this time period is left about Sakleshpur.

Later on, the city of town came into handy with the full domination in the 12th and 13th centuries for the Hoysalas. The Hoysala dynasty has famous architectural contributions with many temples inside and outside Sakleshpur. Many of the remaining ones are the same today, exhibiting the features of Hoysala architecture in ornate carvings and sculptures.

Trekking and Hiking

Sakleshpur is a great haven for trekkers and trek routes where one can explore dense forests, rolling hills, and coffee plantations. The well-known trek is;

  • Kudremukh Trek: This one is probably one of the famous ones because of a trek through dense forest to the meadow before a gentle climb onto the summit; that offers vistas for panoramas of the western ghat range.

  • This Bisle Ghat trek comes easy grade; it helps us traverse biodiversity in this region to view some of the breathtaking waterscape beautifications. This will be packed with great views, dense woods and very rich flora and fauna.

  • Nature allows you to soak within yourself while this trek throws at you the beautiful landscapes surrounding Sakleshpur.

4. Kudremukh

Some tribes had already settled in the region of Kudremukh before the British conquest and the systems of proper government. All of them, in one way or the other, have added to the cultural and historical input that characterizes the area today. The Western Ghats, where the Kudremukh lies, has long been an important cultural region to the natives. It was assumed that the first settlers of this dense forest region were of native Siddi and Gond tribes. The Siddi tribe, said to have originated from the African continent, were brought to this place by the Portuguese colonizer. They settled within the Indian Western Ghats region and eventually became the living component of Indian culture. Today, they still exist in the Kudremukh region. They live in harmony with their surroundings, subsist off the forest for sustenance, and follow long-held customs that are all land-based.

Best Time to Visit

The best period for a visit to Kudremukh is during winter, which is between the months of October and February. The climate is apt at these times since the temperature lies between 12°C and 25°C. It is suited for trekking and any outdoor activity as the sky clears up when the temperature decreases, making it ideal for trekkers who want to soak in the views of the wonder and beauty the Western Ghats offer. The winter months are also a good time for viewing wildlife, as the fauna is more active in the relatively cooler climate.

It lies between June and September. During the same season, another serene beauty of the landscape of Kudremukh takes place when waterfalls like Hanumana Gundi are at full strength. Rainfall makes trails impassable by walking and hiking as the floor is slippery and this becomes dangerous to walk. Visibility is also significantly reduced due to heavy mist thus affecting views and photography.

Summer (March to May) is warm, between 20°C and 35°C. The high temperature, although less crowded, makes it a bit difficult for trekking, especially long treks. The summers are still okay for trekking if it is taken early in the day and with adequate hydration.

5. Hampi

Hampi is a fantasy town, speaking for history, mythology, and architectural grandeur. Hampi is a Heritage Site under the UNESCO. In many cases, it provides an insider's perspective of the Vijayanagara Empire's glorious past and, eventually, a living museum for them. Hampi is of great spiritual and cultural importance. It boasts of the association with one of the epics of India, Ramayana. It is claimed that this mythological city, Kishkindha, was the place where Lord Rama had his rendezvous with Hanuman, the prince of monkeys. The stories of the cities and the temples, as the visitors here, draw pilgrims and narrators. Hampi also celebrates fairs, among which Hampi Utsav is the principal celebration of cultural and traditional music, dance, and processions because it commemorates the historical heritage of the town.

It is ideal for trekking, photography, and visiting temples and monuments because the mornings and evenings are cooler.

Except for Hampi Utsav, which takes place largely in November or January, it is a fantastic cultural experience. Traditional music, dances, and processions are sure to raise a cheer for the great Vijayanagara Empire.

June to September makes it look lush green with a weird kind of atmosphere but heavy showers and landslides might make it a rough journey to travel or explore the place. Summer, March to May, must be avoided as it reaches 40 degrees at times, which is unbearable for outdoor explorations.

Many of the rulers have built temples and other structures. Although nothing of the old past remains, the earliest history goes way back to the formation of this large unit of Western Ghats and the kingdoms this region has been. Till the British colonial period, this area was nearly solely a forest region. Inordinately huge scale development work was going on here at that time. Such forests of Dandeli carry great significance in exploiting this location as a timber-generating ground. Teak and many other species were abundantly present in this location.

Mekedatu Falls River: Cauvery

About the Mekedatu One-Day Trip :

Mekedatu is a location along the Kaveri on the border of the Chamarajanagar and Ramanagara Districts. From this point, about 3.5 kilometres downstream, the river Kaveri flows through a deep and narrow gorge. Mekedatu means 'goat's leap' in Kannada. It is said that a goat being chased by a tiger made a desperate attempt to save its life by leaping from one side of the gorge and managed to cross over the raging river below, whereas the tiger did not attempt to replicate this feat and abandoned the chase. At Mekedaatu, the Kaveri runs through a deep, narrow ravine of hard granite rock. More than 150 meters wide at the confluence (at Sangama), the river flows through the hardly 10 meters gorge at Mekedatu. This place is en route to Mekedatu. Only a few people visit this place, and most go by bus. If people go on foot from Sangama, this place wouldn't be that hard to spot. Here, water is less pleasant than in a place, thus making it much safer. The best time to visit this place is during the monsoon season. The vegetation around the hills is at its greenest and is a real treat to the eye. There will be less water in the summer, and visitors can easily walk along the river. In the rainy season, there will be more water with heavy flow. Both seasons are enjoyable differently.

Shivanasamudra One-Day Trip:

This Trip from Bangalore will take you to two lovely waterfalls on the Cauvery River at Shivanasamudra. At Shivanasamudra Falls, the Cauvery River splits into two and jumps over rocks to create two spectacular falls. This day trip will also allow you to spend some time by the riverside, on a sandy beach at Talakadu! The Kaveri River has long been the lifeline of South Karnataka. It divides the two districts of Chamarajanagar and Mandya as it meanders through the uneven terrain of the Deccan Plateau. Two groups of waterfalls were formed a few kilometres apart from each other. As a result, the streams created the island of Shivanasamudra in between. The first group of falls is called Gaganachukki. The second group to the south-west is called Barachukki Falls. However, many visitors often mistakenly assume that both waterfalls are the two sides of the larger Bara Chukki Falls. Shivanasamudra Falls is a cluster of waterfalls on the borders of Malavalli, Mandya and Kollegala, Chamarajanagara, in Karnataka, India.
