Ettina Bhuja is one of the scenic trekking spots of Karnataka's Chikmagalur district which is a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure lovers. The location 'Ettina Bhuja' originated from Kannada in which 'Ettina' is 'Ox' while 'Bhuja' is 'Shoulder' thus it was named 'Ox's Shoulder.' So, it was so named because its peak resembles a broad and muscular oxen shoulder. The summit is a reflection of the popularity of the Western Ghats and is geographically as well as culturally relevant in Karnataka trekking. Located in Mudigere Taluk in Chikmagalur, Ettina Bhuja is in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site because it is breathtakingly beautiful and bio-diverse. The summit is approximately 1300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level and is a thrilling but easy trekking experience.
Because there is little rise compared to other neighbouring mountains, Ettina Bhuja is an unsafe trek but with a good view, forests, and scenery that shrouded trekkers. Preferred most by adventure enthusiasts for the extent of cross-trekking, Ettina Bhuja is suitable for beginners as well as experienced people. Climbing to the top is an experience in itself, through the thickest green cover of the forests, green grassy stretches, and winding brooks, revelling in the dense vegetation life of the Western Ghats and the experience. The trek normally starts at the village of Shishila, which is the origin point. Or, the trek is initiated from the Byrapura side along a different path but with the same stunning vistas.
Ettina Bhuja, the most symmetrical of Karnataka’s Western Ghats mountains, is as renowned for its beauty as it is for the wealth of myths and histories associated with it. In Chikkamagaluru district, this mountain, literally an "Ox's Shoulder," is of gigantic significance to folklore, Karnataka's heritage culture, and ancient trade routes. For centuries, Ettina Bhuja was a witness to a great deal of events that took place in the region, from medieval pilgrimages to ancient myths and religious trade.
Ettina Bhuja is deeply embedded in Hindu mythology and folklore and hence is a part of Karnataka's cultural heritage. Even the name "Ettina Bhuja" has been derived from the unique shape, which is like the bull's shoulder. Locally, the peak is also associated with Nandi, the bull of Lord Shiva. Most of the pilgrims consider it to be a sacred place where the soul of Nandi resides and grants good luck to the people climbing to the peak. Even a single additional legend credits Ramayana, the ancient epic, to Ettina Bhuja. This one confirms that Lord Rama in his exile traveled through these forests along with Sita and Lakshmana. It is here described that the uppermost as well as the regions surrounding it were constituent elements of Kishkindha, the kingdom of the monkeys of Sugriva.
The most important religious site around Ettina Bhuja is Bhairaveshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was constructed by the great Hoysala dynasty, which ruled Karnataka from the 11th to the 14th century. It has a long history and is graded second to the top. Architecture of the time traditional and constructed under the Hoysala dynasty is seen in the temple with fine carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses and mythological creatures. Pilgrims make sacrifices here before ascending to the summit in a bid to guarantee a successful pilgrimage. In the 16th and 17th centuries when the Keladi Nayakas were in power, the dense Western Ghats forests had served as guerrilla war camps to drive out invading forces, the Mughals initially and the British later. The enclosing stone outcrops of Ettina Bhuja had given shelter to its native freedom fighters during foreign occupation and thus represent an important milestone in Karnataka's fight history.

Trekking in India can be done throughout the year, though the best time to venture out for a trek will largely depend upon the destination and season. Since India is geographically diverse, ranging from the Himalayas in the north to the Western Ghats in the south, the climate is also extremely diverse in the country.
But for others, October to March is essentially the best time for trekking with the best climatic conditions and scenery. Every season is lovely in some other way and therefore there must be a proper selection of the time according to what kind of experience one wants to gain out of an experience of trekking.
Monsoon Season (June to September)
The Indian monsoon season is heaven and hell for trekkers. The view is heaven green, but there are some dangers like landslides, slippery paths, and excessive rain. Some treks, especially in the Western Ghats (such as the Rajmachi Trek, Harishchandragad Trek, and Kudremukh Trek), are ideal to undertake during monsoons due to the lush greenery, roaring waterfalls, and veiled hills.
Winter Season (December to February)
Indian winter trekking is a whole different ball game altogether, with snow tracks and freezing mountain winds. The Himalayas are a snow paradise for snow lovers who love trekking as much as they love snow. Kedarkantha, Brahmatal, Chadar, and Kuari Pass treks are in most demand this season. Though the winter treks are enchanting, they are to be done carefully.
Best Months to Trek (October to March)
October to March is the best time for trekking on India's trekking trails for the majority of trekking enthusiasts. Weather is very dependable with clear weather, low temperatures, and beautiful scenery. This period is also divided into pre-winter (October-November) and winter (December-March) treks.
October to November (Post-Monsoon)
It's the best time to trek, especially in the Himalayas. Monsoon rain washes life in the region with green forest cover and a palette of flowering plants. The clouds clear and white-capped peaks emerge. The most favourite spots of the treks are as follows for this season:
Everest Base Camp Trek (In Nepal but favourite among Indian trekkers)
Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Har Ki Dun Trek
Sandakphu Trek
Hampta Pass Trek
In the Western Ghats, there are still forests and waterfalls still running, so hikes like Mullayanagiri, Agumbe, and Netravati Peak are a guarantee.
December to March (Peak Winter and Early Spring)
For snow and winter landscape lovers, this is ideal time for the high-altitude Himalayan trek. Snow in December starts blanketing trails, and treks such as Kedarkantha, Dayara Bugyal, and Brahmatal become immensely popular. Chadar Trek, where one gets to walk upon the frozen river of Zanskar, is a once-a-lifetime venture but demands the tolerance of extremely cold weather.
Early spring is in February and March when there is snowmelt. The most suitable season to trek is spring since temperatures start rising, flowers bloom, and rhododendrons start sprouting, giving trails a beautiful charm. Nag Tibba and Deoriatal-Chandrashila are the best ones to attempt and try during the spring season.
Weather Conditions Throughout the Year
For planning the treks for the trekkers, here's the recent update on the weather of the different trekking areas of the country during the year:
Himalayas (North India - Uttarakhand, Himachal, Ladakh, Sikkim)
Summer (April-June): Pleasant and warm, perfect for high-altitude treks.
Monsoon (July-September): Landslides can occur, but Ladakh and Spiti are open.
Autumn (October-November): Perfect time with blue skies and painted landscapes.
Winter (Dec-Feb): Extremely cold, best suited for snow treks such as Kedarkantha and Chadar.
Western Ghats & South India (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu)
Summer (March to May): Withering and hot, better to trek at high altitudes.
Monsoon (Jun-Sep): Thick green forests, but rain would surely make the track slippery.
Winter (Oct-Feb): Best time with a lovely and cold climate.
Trekking is arguably the most exciting way to experience nature, offering adventure seekers a chance to be near wonder-struck landscapes, challenge their physiques, and experience the ferocity of the unexplored world. Out of India's many trekking routes, the Shishila and Byrapura routes stand out due to their picturesque trails, rich flora and fauna, and demanding landscape. Both experienced trekkers and amateurs alike can look forward to a lifetime experience of discovery and adventure on these routes.
Trek Distance and Level of Difficulty
The trek distance will be different from the route taken. The Shishila trek is approximately 14-16 km in one direction, and the Byrapura trek is about 12-14 km in one direction. Both routes demand a moderate to difficult level of energy because both routes have steep slopes, stone rubble, dense forests, and unreliable weather conditions. Trekking is very challenging, and the person has to have a good fitness level, stamina, and conditioning. First-time trekkers who are not well experienced in trekking might experience some parts of it as exhaustive, particularly owing to steep inclines and slippery ground.
Beginning Point: Byrapura or Shishila
The trekking can be initiated from the Byrapura village of the Chikmagalur district or the Shishila village of the Dakshina Kannada district. Shishila, near the Kudremukh National Park, is a scenic starting point with thick cover, and Byrapura is a straight climb with fewer water streams. Where one places the starting point is a matter of choice, accessibility, and how challenging one would like it to be. The Shishila trail is a bit longer and has more varied terrain, and the Byrapura trail is shorter but equally challenging.
