India's highest natural elevation, Jog Falls is a stunning waterfall in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka state. Depicted as India's second-highest plunge waterfall, Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River dropping from a stunningly graceful height of about 830 feet (253 meters). In contrast to most waterfalls that consist of a sequence of cascades falling, Jog Falls is a continuous vertical fall, an experience for all tourists and nature lovers in general. It is one of the natural treasures of Karnataka as well as the country's finest tourist destination for all clients in the whole country and even outside the world. Jog Falls is not just a visual treat but also ecologically and hydrologically important.
Shivamogga district Jog Falls is located within 30 kilometres from Karnataka state's Sagara town. Owing to the district's high biodiversity, dense forests, and undulating hills, the waterfall is blessed with a fine landscape. Shivamogga is one of the renowned towns of Karnataka and is even known as the "Gateway to the Western Ghats." Owing to the proximity of the location to the Western Ghats, the place has been made a wildlife sanctuary, an ornithologist paradise, and a sports adventure centre.
Jog Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India, with a height of approximately 830 feet. It is the second-highest waterfall in the country, only behind Meghalaya's Nohkalikai Falls at 1,115 feet (340 meters). Tiered waterfalls drop step-like, but Jog Falls drops vertically down from the rim, revealing a heart-stopping and breathtaking sight, especially during monsoon seasons when the water supply is highest. Jog Falls is exceptional in its altitude and deviation from the others. The fall comprises four separate cascades of diverse character and stream patterns.
They are named one by one as follows:
Raja (King) – The tallest and the strongest among the four, Raja plunges as an intact single column.
Rani (Queen) – Delicate and elegant stream that seems to dance down upon a rock.
Thunder Cascade – Whose name so well expresses the mighty force and thundering tumult of the cataract.
Rocket – A brief, rapid jet that rushes by with hellish fury and velocity.
Jog Falls, one of India's most beautiful waterfalls, is located in the Western Ghats of the state of Karnataka. It is formed by the Sharavathi River and is renowned for its stunning plunge, being India's second-highest plunge waterfall. Unlike other waterfalls that flow down rocks, Jog Falls is a segmented waterfall that plunges into four streams. The four segments, which are referred to as Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket, have unique features that make up the grandeur of the falls.
Jog Falls stands an impressive 253 meters (830 feet) in height and is India's second-highest plunge waterfall, ranking after Meghalaya's Nohkalikai Falls. Nohkalikai is one unbroken plunge, whereas Jog Falls comprises four streams, which translates into a more varied and complex visual situation. Compared to other well-known waterfalls of India, Jog Falls is more in height compared to others like Dhuandhar Falls of Madhya Pradesh and Athirappilly Falls of Kerala.
But compared to Chitrakote Falls of Chhattisgarh, which is otherwise known as the Niagara Falls of India due to its broad width, Jog Falls is narrow and thin in terms of width and volume. It cannot hold a candle worldwide to the greatest waterfalls, such as Venezuela's Angel Falls at 979 meters (3,212 feet) in height or the Tugela Falls in South Africa at a height of 948 meters (3,110 feet). One benefit Jog Falls possesses is being a segmented waterfall and the way it showcases an odd mix of different streams of water all with its unique personality.
There are extreme variations in Jog Falls between the dry season and monsoons. They contribute an enormous part to determining its volume, view, and elegance.
Monsoon Season (June to September)
Sharavathi River receives copious amounts of rain during the monsoon months, and much more water comes flowing through it. Jog Falls therefore becomes a thundering fall with all four parts coming together into one huge plunge. The mighty force of water forms a dense mist over the landscape and obstructs the vision but adds a mystical element to the falls.
Dry Season (December to May)
A dramatic contrast to the above descriptions, Jog Falls falls dramatically during the dry season due to minimal rainfall and managed release of water by the upstream Linganamakki Dam. Instead of the full, thunderous waterfall, feeble streams demarcate the rocky face. Raja will remain the most prominent one, while Rocket and Roarer become the weakness.
Linganamakki Dam is highly beneficial to Karnataka's power industry by supplying water to the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project. It is among India's largest hydroelectric power projects with an installed capacity of nearly 1,469 megawatts (MW). Power generated here is supplied throughout Karnataka, helping the power needs of the state and reducing dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Hydroelectricity is a considerable portion of Karnataka's energy pool, and the extent to which Linganamakki Dam contributes to generating clean power cannot be examined.
The project also mitigates carbon prints by bringing in an environment-friendly source of power on a long-term basis. While thermal powers are based on fossil fuel-fired power stations and create pollution, hydroelectricity from the Sharavathi project is green. Apart from generating power, Linganamakki Dam is a boon to the people of Karnataka in urban as well as rural areas by offering water for various uses.
